I thought a person had to be an American citizen (or a permanent resident) in order to join the armed forces???????????????????????/ Not at all. Service in the military has been the entryway to American citizenship for some of this country's greatest citizens, some of whom paid a particularly high price to become U.S. citizens- and were so honored postumously.
If you don't know about a young American Marine named Joe Gutierrez, you should.
