I believe it was a hoax. As do I. I've seen more to confirm it for me, but I can't remember the webpages. It took a bit of searching to find them, though.

If you do a google search for Mohammed al-Usuquf you will get quite a few links for the hoax story. In fact, I think I went to page 3 of the google links and they were all related to the hoax, which, led me to believe that Mohammed al-Usuquf was not a real person, or at least had no other claim to fame than this instance.

What else would you plan that would be better?
I still think something along that rough outline is far too true.
