But since we look through a looking glass darkly..........

1918 flu victim may hold clues to outbreak

JOHN VON RADOWITZ

A VICTIM of the world’s worst flu epidemic is to be exhumed to help scientists trying to avert the spread of bird flu, it was revealed yesterday.

Scientists plan to remove lung samples from the body of 20-year-old Phyllis Burn, who was buried 85 years ago.

The army officer’s daughter, from Strawberry Hill, London, was one of 50 million people killed by a devastating strain of influenza that swept across the world in 1918.

Evidence points to the 1918 virus being a type of bird flu similar to the one which is now claiming human lives in Asia.

Scientists are desperate to know more about what caused the pandemic, in order to avoid another disaster on a similar scale.

The investigation leader, Professor John Oxford, from Queen Mary’s School of Medicine in London, said: "The big question is: was there something special about this virus that enabled it to kill 50 million people, was there something special about the people that led them to die so quickly, or was it a combination of the two?

"No-one expects the 1918 virus to come back again, but there is the possibility of a new virus arising in the same way today."

Miss Burn was buried in a lead coffin, which, if properly sealed, would have been airtight.

Prof Oxford hopes that even after more than 80 years her internal organs will be sufficiently preserved to allow tissue samples to be taken from her lungs.

The scientists are looking for a "genetic footprint" - fragments of RNA - left by the 1918 virus that could yield important clues.

Prof Oxford said although he did not believe there was any way the virus could come back to life, his team was taking no chances.

The researchers would wear special containment suits as they extracted tissue samples from the body in situ. They would work within a tent erected over the grave.

Back at the laboratory, the first job would be to screen the samples for any sign of dangerous virus.

"I don’t think there is any chance of finding an infectious virus, but you never know," said Prof Oxford. "We are treading into the unknown a little bit."

Only a handful of samples from the 1918 pandemic exists in Britain and the United States. They consist of small lung "blocks" about half the size of a sugar cube.

Scientists have already managed to identify half a dozen of the virus’s genes. The clues point to an avian, or bird, virus - but not the same strain as the one currently worrying health officials in Vietnam and Thailand.

The 1918 virus was an H1 strain, whereas the virus responsible for the new outbreaks is categorised as H5.

In Vietnam, at least six people have been killed by the infection and two other cases have been confirmed.

The World Health Organisation said yesterday that two other deaths being investigated in Vietnam had been prematurely blamed on the virus.

At present, the bird virus does not seem capable of passing from person to person, as happened in the 1918 pandemic.

The greatest fear of experts is that it will genetically combine with normal human flu to produce an infection that can sweep through populations.

"That’s the Armageddon scenario - that the two will mix together," said Prof Oxford.

A key question that scientists want answered is whether such a combination triggered the 1918 pandemic.

Prof Oxford has spent a year clearing obstacles in the way of the exhumation, but believes he is now "95 per cent there".

remember when they were saying "ben laden was cornered in a 40 square mile region of afghanistan"? that was all BS also. I am sure there are some old FR threads about it. so why do we lend credence to this "we'll get him this year" story? let's face it, if this story about the "spring offensive" is true, and not disinformation, its the most serious leak of a military secret since the rosenbergs. so I'm betting we leaked it for a reason.

Red alert on bird flu, govt extends poultry ban to US, Europe
Friday January 30 2004 00:30 IST
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Thursday extended the ban on import of poultry products to cover US and Europe, none of which have reported cases so far. It had on Wednesday banned imports from nine countries which have reported cases of bird flu.

Surveillance has also been increased in border states; passengers of the Samjhauta Express from Pakistan will also be monitored. Health Minister Sushma Swaraj announced the ban after the first high-level coordination meeting of ministries of health and agriculture on Thursday. ``More attention is being paid to border states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab, where a red alert has been declared,'' she told reporters after the meeting attended by Agriculture Minister Rajnath Singh and representatives of WHO and FAO.

Swaraj said no case of bird flu has been reported in the country so far and state governments had been asked to report to the Centre on reports of mass death of chickens or poultry birds. ``The situation is fully under control,'' she said. The minister said the Saarc secretary general has suggested a meeting of agriculture and livestock ministries of member countries, India has offered to host such a meeting. Detailed guidelines have been issued to the states to be distributed to all the chief secretaries and veterinary universities to prevent an outbreak and check spread of the disease in case of one.

The government has also decided to declare a red alert to prevent spread of the disease. ``More checks are likely to be on the border states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab, where a red alert has been declared,'' Swaraj said. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly and all regional laboratories have been asked to test the samples in case of suspected bird flu deaths and also send the material to High Security Animal Disease Lab (HSADL) at Bhopal for confirmation.

The states have been asked to activate the State Animal Disease Emergency Committee to tackle the situation. Secretaries and directors of animal husbandry have issued guidelines and immediately report to the Centre.

Flu fears from Bangladesh

KOLKATA: Bird flu might have reached Bangladesh, putting West Bengal under pressure, sources at the Centre's medical research institute here. Sources at the School of Tropical Medicine said the Institute of Communicable Diseases in Delhi had received more than ``30 samples of suspected bird-flu cases for investigations from Bangladesh''.

A senior scientist at the institute said despite the claim of Bangladesh's Animal Resource Minister Anisur Rahaman on Wednesday that no cases have been reported in the country, the samples had been sent. ``We are not trying to press the panic button, but just saying `so far it's not detected in India' will not give us any escape route in case of an outbreak or doesn't stand as guarantee that it will not happen here,'' Deputy Director of the Virology Department of STM D.K. Neogi said. Nobody from the STM has been included in the five-member vigilance committee set up by the Animal Resources Department under the Union Government guideline.

GUIDELINES

* Stop entry of birds from outside immediately

* Regulate entry of people, material and vehicles from affected areas * Ensure proper disposal of killed birds and droppings by deep burial or incineration

* Stop exchange of material and personnel between farms in affected areas

* Adopt strict disinfection procedures including protective clothing, gloves, masks and caps while entering poultry pen

I still believe that if anything does happen, its more along the lines of a "small scale" attack ("small" in comparison to all this talk of nuclear weapons): truck or car bomb, suicide bombing, etc.

"This is the first time we come here after the fall of Saddam's regime and it feels so different - we are so free," he said.

"We've seen a lot of terrorism from the former regime, and we've suffered in wars. We do not fear terrorism any more," he said. "The real terroriser has gone."

I believe so and they have Trident missiles. There is quite a bit of military in the area in addition to this base. Here's some info. This isn't "loose lips" as all of this is found with a simple google search. link

Some of the image files I'm running across on the internet are just repulsive. Professionally done - but disgusting. Take this one for example:

This is the kind of war we are fighting - they are glorifying the men who hijacked those planed on September 11.

And they want to do it again.

BIN LADEN RELATIVES HAVE TIES TO TEXAS
Terrorist's half-brother did business - and met his death - in state

KINGSLAND -- In an earlier time, the Binladen name didn't stir up the
locals in this Hill Country hamlet, and the famous Saudi family and the
Bushes of Texas moved in similar financial circles down in Houston.

Twenty-eight years ago, long before Osama bin Laden gained infamy as an
accused terrorist mastermind, his oldest half-brother, Salem -- whose side
of the family spelled its last name Binladen or Binladin -- came to Texas
on a simple quest to recruit his father's former pilot to fly the family's
corporate jet.

Instead, the family ended up with a business toehold in Texas that included
ownership of a small Houston airport and a San Antonio aviation services
company, along with a modest riverside house in a subdivision called
Enchanted Valley....

Any of you folks having net problems tonight?

I'm at a State University in northwest Ohio, very reliable network, but it's gone completely dead 3 times in the last hour and 5 times in the last 2 days. Each time has only been for a few minutes, 5 at the most, but it's very unusual.

This last time, a few minutes ago, when it came back up I was able to get everywhere but back here. Started to panic, I've only been here for a few weeks, but you all are like a security blanket to me now.
