My understanding is that Brown Water Navy (patrol boat) crewman wore them. They certainly did when I was in the Corps in the early 80s.
I am going to look around for a used copy of his book. I understand that it has pretty much disappeared since his intention to run for president became known. I wonder what's in it that he doesn't want people reading? (Well I think I know, but I'd like to have some direct quotes)
