[history]
A congressional investigation into whether federal employees have bogus college diplomas is expanding to the Defense Department.
The General Accounting Office launched an investigation in July at the urging of Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, initially looking at other federal agencies.

Uh oh. I wonder if they'll check on my degree from Ed's School of Engineering and Croissants.

I would hope that for any important job they would insist on looking at the applicant's college transcript to see who excelled at taking demanding courses and who just squeezed by doing the minumum amount of work (although I guess that could be faked, too).

It can all be faked. In lots of cases a diploma means squat. Some guy has a degree in history and becomes a construction manager. Or some guy has a degree in English and gets hired in the computor field. Most people do not work in the same field in which they got their degree. So, my question is this: Should a guy with a "degree" get the job just because he has the degree when the other is more qualified? Many companies will only hire those with a degree. They won't even interview someone without a degree. And that's why degrees are being mass produced.

Perhaps they should start by looking at he military. Officers are commissioned based upon a fur year degree and that degree often (more than merely "often") has nothing to do with infantry, artillary, leadership, etc.) I know a hospital commander who had a degree in folk dance! It is not at all unusual!
