Hastert visits Elgin: U.S. House speaker talks on immigration, energy, politics issues
Elgin Several weeks ago, President George W. Bush rolled out a program to grant temporary work permits to undocumented immigrants.
But before the program can proceed, it needs to pass Congress which probably won't happen, U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert told The Courier News Editorial Board on Thursday.
"I don't think there's support to get that through Congress," the Yorkville Republican said. "But I think this is a chance to start a debate."
Hastert acknowledged that immigration problems are growing in the Fox Valley, and with large immigrant populations in Elgin and Aurora, many family members are moving to the area from their home countries. He stressed that there should be a program for people to come to the United States, work for a few years and be able to go home.
With agricultural and factory jobs across Illinois being filled by immigrant workers, Hastert stressed that they are "doing important work."
"And they shouldn't be forced to stay here and hide," he said.
But Hastert puts his foot down when asked if undocumented immigrants already in the country should be given amnesty, rather than proceed through the existing citizenship process.
"If you put amnesty in there, you short-circuit the system," he said. "You can't change the rules and amnesty changes the rules."

Not the same thing. Not the same thing, AT ALL.
Tom DeLay can stop this cold, and likely will.

Thanks to Bush the whole subject of amnesty is now on the table. Bingo.
Beyond emboldening the Left, he's shouting to the world that our immigration laws aren't going to be enforced, reinforcing the impression of weakness given by, surprise, his three-year non-enforcement of our immigration laws.

" So don't get your undies in a bunch until there's a bill on the table, which probably will be
no time soon."
I think part of this was to force the Democrats to tack left on immigration, which has already happened with the Daschle-Dingell-Hagel-Bagel Bill.
" The senators proposed that undocumented workers and their families living in the United States be given the chance to become "invested stakeholders" in the country by earning legal permanent residence through work." Bush said they have to go back to their home countries after 3 years .
" In addition, the senators' proposal would remove limits on the number of spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents who can get visas to come to the United States and apply for residency, treating them like the spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens."

The only thing different is that instead of depending on the SC to stop it, we are depending on the House/Senate to stop it. And they have done a EXCELLENT job on holding the line on spending, haven't they?

That's the Dennis Hastert I'm used to hearing... I hope he sticks by that and doesn't give in to pressure.I don't see why you're giving Hastert any kudos. He's claiming that "amnesty changes the rules" and "short-circuits the system" yet it doesn't seem to bother him one dang bit that allowing illegal aliens to remain here (with or without some "blue card") also changes the rules and short circuits the system. It sounds to me like he's just spewing more B.S.

So, what are you gonna do? Just sit on your fat butt and bellyache, or contact your local rep?
Otherwise, you're just griping.

What are you going to do? You appear to be the one that thinks others are going to solve the problem for you. I have contacted those that 'represent' me to express my feelings. But that was nice of you to assume that I haven't done anything.
Let me ask you one final question if I may. Do you always jump to such conclusions before asking what the others have done?

Do you always jump to such conclusions before asking what the others have done? Yes. Based on past performance here, most of the howler monkeys never leave their cages.
Don't you have somebody's music to fair use?

I don't see why you're giving Hastert any kudos He does appear to support a temporary worker program, which I do not. But at least he's saying no to Bush's idea of granting citizenship to illegals after the fact, which is a major component of the plan.
What it looks like he's open to is a guest worker program along the lines that Tancredo has proposed.

Like father, like son.
Does the phrase " No New Taxes" ring any bells to you?
Unlike you, I consider President Bush a man of his word.
I respect him.
You can proffer all the free Koolaid you want, but GWB campaigned on this topic and has not wavered in his views.
I expect him to push hard for this nightmarish travesty of justice. He said he would.I take him at his word.
Why dont you?

Why dont you? It was a political move. There's no support for it.
And, if you think George W is like his father politically, you're not watching what's going on.
