I think that's just a knee pad that he has pushed down to where it's more comfortable.

Is the troop on the left wearing an ankle gun? Its a kneeguard. Great for a rapid drop to the "kneeling position" for fire. Sucks to pound your knees on rocks. Look at the first photo in post #1. (Please don't call them kneepads, that reminds me of Monica and the Impeached 42nd POTUS.)
