a new temporary worker program to match willing foreign workers with willing employers when no Americans can be found to fill the job. This reform will be good for our economy because employers will find needed workers in an honest and orderly system. A temporary worker program will help protect our homeland, allowing Border Patrol and law enforcement to focus on true threats to our national security.

Or in English, let's give illegals jobs so that more of them can come it.

Feh.

Bush has lost the faith of a lot of people with crap like this.

No matter how you sugar coat it, the "guest worker" program is nothing short of amnesty, pure and simple.

We have to deal with illegals and the threat posed by the porous Mexican border. Giving illegals free access to jobs is not the way to do it, period.

Just damn.

If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

Several say that we complain too much, but NOW, before the next election is the time for the grassroots Republicans to b$tch loudly and let Bush hear our concerns. Maybe he'll see it's no joke to millions of us. I don't won't a Dem to win at all, that would be a disaster. Right now, though, Bush is listening and he might see how strongly Republican grassroot types feel about the illegal situation and our borders.

I am deeply disappointed by this particular Bush initiative, too.

This could cause some of his base to stay home in disgust. Not me, but plenty of other folks, I would bet.

I know I'm in the minority on this position, but I actually think he has a good plan. Our nation has thrived by hard working immigrants with a desire to have a better life. Not every mexican is coming here to rape and steal. In fact, before we started tightening our grip on the border it was common for illegals to come over to harvest fruits, get paid and then RETURN to Mexico. But now since we have tightened the border controls (starting in the 80s--I think that's when it started), illegals come and don't return. Not only that since they can't return they bring their families with them. So what used to be one hard working man coming across. Now it's one hard working man, his wife and 4 kids. In order to get across they have to pay some low life to smuggle them across. A smuggler is a smuggler so they bring the drugs too. Unless you want to put up a Berlin-style wall, this problem will continue. A guest worker program allows us to track them while they are here and focus on the bad guys. Would it help if he called it a fine instead of a fee that those already here have to pay?
