Abstract: America considered AIDS the "gay plague" until 1985, when Rock Hudson's death made AIDS a household word, according to an entry in the Wall Street Journal's Centennial Journal, which recounts major events in the paper's 100-year history.
In 1983, the head of the U.S. Public Health Service said AIDS was no threat to the publicb--only 1,450 people were infected at the time, all of them gay and bisexual men and IV drug users.
By 1985, AIDS was a global public health crisis, and statistics in Africa presaged rising heterosexual transmission of HIV.
This year, the government will spend almost $1.3 billion on AIDS research and treatment, but a vaccine--a silver bullet--is still a remote possibility.
