I don't think I've ever seen a SOTU address where the President ridiculed his opponents positions. It was a very effective tactic.

"I don't think I've ever seen a SOTU address where the President ridiculed his opponents positions. It was a very effective tactic." I didn't think it was so much ridicule as it was some well-deserved b***h slappin'. It's just that he has such a classy way of doing it, it has an entertainment quality to it. They are trashing him every time they open their mouths in front of a camera or microphone, completely disrespectful of both the president and the office. They lie shamelessly about him and work hard to get others to believe their lies. They got better than they deserved in my opinion.
I also thought that when he was talking about the middle east that there was another very subtle layer of meaning in the words that implied a domestic parallel. I may be reading something into it that wasn't there, but it was applicable nevertheless.

In other words, he was hiding behind his attacks on his opponents.
