The Salvation Army says it's receiving a gift from the late heiress of the McDonald's corporation -- likely to total more than one-point-five (b) billion dollars. The charity's national commander says they are "thrilled" -- but also "humbled" -- by Joan Kroc's generosity.
Kroc, who died in October, earmarked the gift for developing community centers across the country. They would be similar to a center that opened in her and her husband's name in San Diego almost two years ago.
The donation specifies that half of the money be placed in an endowment so that the earnings would partially support the operation of the new centers.
The other half is for building the centers.

She wasted a couple hundred thousand giving to NPR, but htis sort of makes up for that. Forbes Magazine has rated the Salvation Army as the most efficient non-profit group in the USA in terms of low overhead, and the money actually being put to proper use. This is a good thing.

i tried to donate a perfectly usable couch to them a few years back. they came, looked at it, found a small one inch tear in the fabric on the back side, pronounced it unfit, and left in a huff.
add the fact that my former MIL was an official of thiers, and you know why they have never seen a dime of my money since.
btw: A local agency was very grateful to receive my couch and it ended up at the new homw of a burned out family.

Probably the worst thing that could have happened to that group. I agree. Once they get used to having lots of money, they tend to EXPECT it. Kinda like welfare recipients.

Does anyone know what percentage of the donation goes directly into the hands of the actual army? Or will the majority be eaten up by administration fees by greedy non-profit execs?
