I'll also throw out the theory that it doesn't really matter who George W.'s opponent is...
A re-election campaign is really a referendum on the previous four years. Show me a president who has won re-election in the last 100 years who wouldn't have if he had a better opponent.
The only example I can think of is Tom Dewey vs Truman... but Truman wasn't running for re-election.
