third. The one thing he had to do in this speech was make sure his hard core supporters stayed on board, and that they knew he wasn't giving up. This required a "red meat" speech, and that's what he gave them. I agree he was playing to his base ... but at the same time, he came off looking like a complete Nut Case

Plying to your (hate-filled) base is OK.
As long as everybody can't listen/doesn't listen/isn't told by the compliant media to listen!
When the media started giving him all the attention, all the time, his earlier (and equally frequent) screw-ups and temper tantrums could no longer be ignored.
Especially as soon as Hillary's crews turned the handcuffs loose.
