Whoa. I can read that. That's scary. So, why do we need to learn to spell? ;)

Hey! This is going to cause big problems with the militant phonics advocates, don't you think?

LOL! Wonder what point is trying to be made here by Cambridge? That there are so many interesting ways to spend government grants?

The only reason you can read this is because you already know how to read the normal spellings. If you were brought up trying to read this you wouldn't be able to interpret it. Your brain needs to know the correct spelling in the first place in order to make the translation. Our brains are pretty good data processors.

Not hardly. ;) But it is a sterling example of the adage "There's nothing more dangerous than a piece of the truth".

You took the words right out of my mouth.
I've been saying the same thing to my 7-year-old who is having trouble with spelling. I told him that once he gets it all down pat, he won't believe how fast he can read and spell because he will not have to read every single letter anymore. I'll go even further and say that proficient readers do not even have to read every single word -- they see whole phrases or sentences.
But you have to know the correct spellings and grammar in order to do that. If you don't...it's all just mush.
