maramite is one of the health foods the British developed because of their far flung empire, and lack of refrigeration.
You remember how the British were called Limeys, because they carried limes on their ships to prevent scurvey. Back in those days when Scurvey, rickets, beri beri were real scourages and problems before the discovery of vitamins, it was found that certain foods maintained health, and didn't need refrigeration. American ships carried apples and potatoes to give the sailors vitamin C. Lack of Vitamin B is another problem, and that's where Maramite and things like Cod Liver Oil come in. The Brits developed a lot of foods/supplaments which didn't require refrigeration. Grog and Beer were two they did pretty well with. And then one of my favorites was Canned Cheese. Not as good as good fresh Wisconsin cheese, but good and an interesting flavor which you aquire a taste for.
Canned and cured hams and dried fish are also good. Sour cream and butter were probably the first developed.
It is amazing, really, when you go think back and wonder how our ancestors survived without refrigeration and vitamins - and thanks to them, how little a refrigerator is actually needed.
