Really it's the shallowness of Hollywood bimbos that is getting slammed here. Not all women over 40 are old hags --- but those whose careers were based around being attractive bimbos should know that there is a time limit on that. Just like strippers and anyone else who wants to be paid only for how they look.
These women only had careers because of their looks in the first place and now those looks aren't there --- so too bad for them.

Breathes there a man or woman who, in his/her wildest dreams, can
imagine that
Whoopi Goldberg EVER landed a part for being a hottie?

(I don't really share your admiration for her on the other planes, either; talented, true, but talent so overshadowed by nasty, bitter, arrogant anger.)

I liked the Color of Purple. It's a very good movie.
And (heaven help me) I liked the first "Sister Act."

Oh, yeah, she can be fun, it's true. I thought she was surprisingly good in
Ghost, too.
But for me, every time her face appeared in Star Trek: TNG... (cue sound of screeching breaks, collision).

I'm to the age where ladies in their early 40's can look young and sexy.
But no one has a "right" to a particular movie role.

Her talent my be questionable, but that Demi's holding up pretty good at 40 is undeniable.
To: Sub-Driver
A lot of professions don't want women (or men) over 40. That's life, deal with it.
To: Sub-Driver
Speaking of aging well have any of you ladies out there checked out Mikhail Baryshnikov in Sex and the City? My God the man is even better looking now than he was when he was much younger.
To: Jim Cane
Demi is doing what any successful actor should do, own a production company so you can still make money even after you can't get any more movie roles. It's like any profession, only plan to work for someone else until your 40, and save up enough money to start your own business because once you hit 40, it will be much tougher to stay employed, in any industry.

Ain't it a beeatch to no longer make millions relying on one's looks?
My advice ladies... do what the rest of us do when adversity hits, come down to sea level and get a real job.
As Mrs. Spafford (7th & 8th grade history teacher) once told us in the late 70s... whoever told you life was fair, they lied.

Well, Demi's paid someone lots of $$$ to help "hold her up" if I recall correctly. That's me. She pays me to be her "hand bra". I have to follow her around with my hands under her shirt holding them up to make her look pert.
Or was that just a dream....?
To: Pukin Dog
How many things look good at 40 except for currency, precious metals minerals and liquor?I look damn good at 45. I wonder what you look like?
To: Sub-Driver
The right thing to do, if you're not a Lib whiner, is to form your own production company, commission some scripts, and create the film that has the roles in it that you want.
There's lots of stories to be written about older women; in fact, lots of good films have been made about older women...films that even libs could be in, like Playing For Time, Stanley and Iris, or even Steel Magnolias.
If you want something to happen, sometimes you gotta make it happen.
