[history]
The day after President Bush announced his temporary-worker proposal, the phone began ringing off the hook at David Dai's office in Tempe. It hasn't stopped since.
Most of the hundreds of calls Dai has received over the past week are from Asian immigrants in the Valley wondering how Bush's proposal could affect them.

And then there is my family from Norway...no mention of them. Hmph.
And, my hubby's family came from England...no mention them either....
I feel so neglected.
Gee Whiz.

Aren't all illegals created equal, endowed by their creator with inalienable rights and all that?

Although Bush's temporary-worker proposal seems aimed primarily at Mexican immigrants, millions of immigrants from other countries, especially Asian countries, also could be affected, including thousands of Asians in Arizona. Bush's failure to include them in his immigration speech last week, however, left many immigrant groups feeling slighted.
I have always said this was about hispanics and nothing else. Shows the true reason behind this program. It has nothing to do with compassion or the desire "to solve the immigration issue". It's about votes. Nothing more. Bush is just another damn politician.

This immigration proposal is so full of holes I could drive a convoy of trucks carrying 10 million Chinese immigrants through it. (If Chinese I'd be in one of the trucks getting here.) If Asian sweatshop owners in the States decide by gentleman's agreements to post ALL their help wanted ads in Chinese language only newspapers, they will be able to fill almost all positions with blue card Chinese immigrants. Once here, these blue card immigrants will be protected by the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which bans discrimination by 'nation of origin". The only other possibility is that Bush is trying to dismantle the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It's so ill conceived, such demogoguery to the immigrant communities it disgusts me, and every "main street" Republican I've talked with on the issue. I live in NJ, how badly received was this received across the country?
In 1979, Chinas Vice-Premier Deng Xiaoping, during a state visit to Washington, met with President Jimmy Carter. Mr. Vice-Premier, the president said, The Jackson-Vanik amendment prohibits our grantingmost-favoured-nation status to centrally-planned economies, unless they provide freedom of departure for their own nationals. Deng Xiaoping leaned back in his chair, smiled, and asked, Well, Mr. President, how many Chinese nationals do you want? Ten million? Twenty million?Thirty million? Not surprisingly, that exchange marked the end of Jimmy Carters brief campaign to grant Chinese citizens the right to leave their country. This anecdote taken from Heavens Door. ImmigrationPolicy and the American Economy by George Borjas
In practice Bush has proposed giving away what even Jimmy Carter saw as reprehensible.
