"In 2000, it was then-Gore aide Lehane who took an innocuous Republican campaign ad that flashed the word "De-moc-rats" across the screen and turned it into a major scandal."

Lehane's tactic was so successful that we still call them "RATS" today.

Some labels are just so apt.

And .. as a result of that ad, the DEMOCRAT party has tried (with some success) to change its name to the DemocratIC party to keep the repubs from using the "rat" or "rats" against them.

For this reason, I always call them DEMOCRAT not democratic.

It sure is amazing how Lehane is considered some sort of political master even though his candidates always prove to be complete losers (Gore, Clark, etc) and his biggest "achievement" has been to create a new, permanent insult for the Democratic Party.

"De-moc-rats"

It wasn't even Democrats. It was Bureaucrats. The line was "Who decides? Bureaucrats decide". The way the MTV-style editing worked out, the word RATS appeared on its own for a fraction. That's the neatest part -- they weren't even talking about democrats right then and with Lehane's whining they still managed to adopt the new nickname. When will they change their aymbol?
