Democrats plan Saturday event honoring heroes

The Lubbock County Democratic Party has a full day of events scheduled for Saturday, including strategy sessions and a banquet honoring U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm.

The Abilene Democrat will be honored at the fourth annual Local Heroes Banquet, and newly elected Texas Democratic Party Chairman Charles Soechting will speak during a luncheon.

Dinner for the Local Heroes Banquet begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Ballroom, 601 Ave. Q. Cocktails will be served starting at 5:30 p.m.

To purchase tickets, call 749-8683. More information is available online at www.lubbockdemocrats.org.

Democrats have rallied behind Stenholm after he was targeted by Republicans, who bolstered their numbers in Congress through redistricting.

Stenholm, who has served in Congress for 26 years, is the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee and helped author the 2001 farm bill.

He announced this week that he will run against U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, for the 19th District seat.

Democrats also will hold strategy sessions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Civic Center. A session on delegation selection tactics begins at 10 a.m., followed by the luncheon at noon. Grassroots Strategies for West Texas will be presented at 1 p.m.

Call Mary Hatfield at 799-7126 for more information or to register for the workshop or the luncheon. She can be e-mailed at mary.hatfield@ttu.edu.

Actually only require a small part of the civic center, just the broom closet, for a convention of Texas Dims.

You may be underestimating the Lubbock "democracy." It intends to replace a freshman Republican congressman with a popular Democrat veteran from a neighboring city. It would be the supreme irony for this change to happen in the year of the GOP-drawn redistricting. Stenholm has Lubbock roots: he is a very serious candidate in my judgment. He has the name ID, and in some cases, that is the most important requirement for victory.
