FreeRepublic Hologram

A FreeRepublic Hologram

Here's a little diddy that we at ActionAmerica.org worked up for all you FReepers out there. I hope that you enjoy it. It's a plain paper hologram, also referred to as a stereogram. I chose a red, white and blue background for obvious reasons. An explanation, with download and print instructions follows.

The image is copyrighted, but all that I require is that if you wish to make copies to pass on to others via email or to post it on your web site, you must retain the copyright notice near the upper right corner of the image and place a notice of this requirement in the email or on the web page, where it appears. Though not required, I would appreciate a FReepMail, if you should post it to a web page.

The image that you see on this page is reduced in size, to allow it to fit in your browser window, without having to resize that window. In fact, if you don't have a Mac, that generally uses wider screens or a PC with a giant screen, set to a high resolution, the full size image won't all fit on your screen at 100%, anyway. But, that shouldn't matter, for two reasons.

First, you can see the hologram, just as it is presented on this page. Second, if you want to see the larger image or print it, the underlying, full size image is actually present. All you have to do is click on the image and save it to your disk and what you will have, can be displayed in Preview, at appropriate magnification for your monitor or printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper in landscape mode, without any loss of resolution. It is sized to take up most of a letter size page. The file is just over 300KB.

If you are familiar with these holograms, you can skip over the rest of this text and go straight to the image. If not, then here is how you view it. The trick is to focus each eye, individually, on the screen (paper), but have the gaze of both eyes meet at a point about 4 inches behind the screen (paper). The result is that each eye is focusing on a different point on the screen (paper). If that explanation does not make sense, there is a diagram following the hologram, that shows what I am talking about. This hologram is optimized for viewing at about 20 inches. In other words, that's where you should be able to get your initial focus locked on, best. Once you see the image, you will find that you can see it at quite a range of distances.

To help you focus, I have included 2 yellow dots at the bottom of the image. When you are focused properly, they will appear to be 3 (not 2) equally spaced dots and the middle dot will be crystal clear. When that middle dot is sharp, just follow the background up and the hollogram should be in focus. Here's a hint. Immediately under the copyright box is the letter "E" in the word "FREE". Further, a hint image, that shows what you should be looking for, follows the diagram, so if you don't want to see the hint, don't scroll past the bottom of the diagram, until you are ready to look at it.

Enjoy!

Here is the hint image. It's what is hidden in all that mess.

Keep on FReepin'.

I can get 3 dots but I can't keep at that focal when I try to take in the full picture. I can see edges starting to form (no distinct shape).

I've never been able to get these to work (and I can handle old stereoscopes without a viewer).

Sweet_Sunflower29, try the hologram again. I did some manual cleanup on the eagle's beak and around his eyes and he looks a lot better now. I uploaded the updated image to the same filename, so the image at the top of this page is now the improved version. You should be able to make out the shape more easily.

As pbear8 said earlier, "If you can't see this, you must be a Democrat." LOL.

Good Luck.

I can get 3 dots but I can't keep at that focal when I try to take in the full picture.

It's very important that once you have the three dots, you continue to look at the center dot until it is very sharp and clear and you can see very distinct edges. At that point, you will see that the background appears to be a few inches behind your screen or paper. When you get to that point, just follow the background up to the image.

Some people still have trouble, even after doing that. But, if you take the time to get that center dot clearly in focus, you stand a much better chance of seeing the hologram.

Thanks! This is the first one of these things I've been able to see, ever. I thought I'd give this one a try since I already had a severe headache - the worst outcome would be my inability to see anything.

What a delightful surprise. Hmmmm, wait! I wonder if having a migraine to begin with helps.

Weegee, not sure if this will help - have you ever stared into space while thinking about someone distant or perhaps a situation in the past, yet while in this staring mode end up staring into the face of someone, not really noticing them and still lost in thought?

That's the kind of focus which seems to help here.

Maybe I should have inhaled when I was younger. I have been trying for 10 minutes and have never seen a third dot.

One eye should make no difference. Just move your head back and forth real fast ...

... No. Never mind. Didn't work.

But I know something that will work. Drink a couple of six-packs of beer before looking at the hologram. You may still have trouble seeing the hologram, but I can guarantee that you'll see a lot more than two dots.

I can attest to that phenomena. Sometimes when I am in a drawing program, filling a large area with a color (or a small region next to a particular shade of another color) it will seem like there is a color shift (there isn't).

Maybe it's the media. On my LCD screen, there is no way they are the same density.

Tell me I'm not a Rat!!!

You're not a Rat. A Rat wouldn't recognize the word "Republic", even if he saw it.

On the other hand, not being able to see the word "Free" could be a sign of the onset of a serious mental condition, that could lead to your becoming a liberal, at some time in the future. Then again, weegee, it's probably that you just had one too many beers and need to sleep it off.  8^)
