We have friends who just returned from being stationed in Hawaii . The husband did a 267 day deployment. I CANNOT imagine it!

We'll if it will make some of you folks perk up, today in Southern California it was pretty chilly too. Go down to 71 degrees with a pretty brisk 6 mph Pacific breeze.

I just hope it doesn't get any colder, if it does, I'm going to have to wash my jacket I wore last winter.

A 5th generation Minnesotan's cold weather tips

When you take one breath through your nose and your nose hairs freeze, it is cold.

• Frost Bite - Frostbite(Search), literally, frozen body tissue - usually skin but sometimes deeper - and must be handled carefully to prevent permanent tissue damage or loss.
• Dress in Layers - Keep your bodily functions in mind when you "multi-layer". Union suits with the trapdoor are a good choice for layer 1. Under -10°F strive for at least 3 layers.
• Keep your feet warm - If you are not prepared your toes will freeze first.
• Keep your head and face warm - You lose the greatest percentage of heat through your brainbox. Mind your ears, if you are prepared they will freeze first. When it's cold enough, or the wind is blowing hard enough, your face will freeze-burn in the time it takes to go from the parked car to the mall.
• Keep your fingers protected - Touching metal, like a doorknob or your cars ignition switch, when it's really cold will freeze-burn you.
• Know your cars battery - Any car battery can fail miserably when it's stupid cold. Especially old batteries. It's always good to have jumper cables.
• Beware "Black ice" - Black Ice is the water vapor from auto exhaust freezeing on the road. It's called Black Ice because you can't see it. I would bet a huge percentage of the traffic snarls on cold days are from fender-benders caused by Black Ice stealing traction from someone when they really needed some.
• Car warming 101: - It is best, when possible to allow a car's engine to warm for a few minutes WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. Once the engine is warm there is no reason to leave it running while making a coffee dash. In fact, if your engine is warm it will run great on the cold-condensed air.
• Hardwood in the fireplace - Always try to burn the hardwoods in your stove or fireplace. Soft woods, such as the spruce or pine, will foul your chimney and cause chimney fires. Chimney fires are bad.
• Shelter your animals - Even limited exposure to extremely low temperatures is deadly.
• Objects get brittle - Brittle things shatter. Just as summer heat can heave a road's surface, so can cold. Even more.
• Your vision and hearing will become acute
• space heaters - An oil-filled radiator-type works great under the window to keep a room toasty. While fuel-burning heaters are the best to heat a garage or piece of equipment that needs thawing fast. The heaters that try to both heat well and heat fast will make you angry.
  Feeding electrical heaters can get spendy. While the main problem with fuel-burning heaters is that they tend to eat all the oxygen. Oxygen, as we all know, is vital for humans.
• Good time to curl up with the Mrs - Cold is always good for getting close.
• Core Temperature - The human body operates at 37°C/98.6°F. If you change the body temperature of a human ±5° they will perish. Human body temperature is most directly influenced by the largest human organ, the skin.
