Trustee Bernard Michna was among the minority who defended the ban.

"There could have been an outcome much more bleak for that family if more shots had been fired," Michna said, according to the Tribune. "I think it's close to unanimous there will be no change in the handgun ordinance."

Wilmette is largely Jewish. At the risk of having my post nuked: Have these folks learned nothing from the nightmare of Nazi Germany in which gun grabs came early?

And in other news: in my state, a man bursts into the front door of a home and kills a high school coach and his son and the Atlanta news writes a "poor victim/sympathy" column for the perpetrator who was shot and killed by police. The High School is traumatized by their loss--a family is devasted.

Chaney (perpetrator) invaded two Lilburn homes, stealing a car at one, then driving it to the other, where he went to the front door (unexplained in previous report) and then shot and killed a Tucker High School football coach, Bill Venable, and his son, Billy Jr..

Note: The perpetrators own mother walked into a church 3 months ago and shot the pastor and her own mother and then turned the gun on herself. So the article bemoans the "down-on-his-luck" angle.

Warning: Barf Alert-Above is the link to the "poor" perpetrator article (which has replaced the article covering the violent murder of 2 good, law abiding family members, in their own home)---if you have the stomach to read it. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution is the NYT of the South

Jews, themselves, wonder the same thing.

"My experience is handguns create a hazard in the home," he told the crowd, according to the Tribune. "My experience is that handguns are far more likely to be stolen, to be used or threatened to be used in domestic situations, or to be used or threatened to be used in suicides."

______

So really thieves and suicidal individuals are the hazard, not "evil guns". As for the domestic situations, against thieves are responsible for creating the situation where a homeowner needs to brandish or use their weapon.

"Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter defended the handgun ban."

Hmmmmm, and how many handguns are in YOUR home George?
Ummm-hmmmmm, I see.

Sounds like the police chief needs to get a real job. Police get their power temporarily from us their employer. If they can't do the job, and demonstrably, they don't, then we take that power back.

Here's what I suggest. Have some of that "unruly" crowd, which insists on doing what the police can't, sue the chief and the village trustees for incompetence and malicious prosecution. I am serious. I'm in for a monthly financial contribution for however long it takes to replace both the chief and the trustees...

There were a host of second amendment supporters who passionately and eloquently made their points. One speaker made a particularly cogent point when he highlighted a dismaying trend of constitutional inversion, that of legit constitutional rights, (Bearing arms, private property, freedom of speech, equal protection) being demoted to privleges, and bogus ones (health care, illegal alien driver's licenses, abortion, welfare, etc.) are becoming hallowed US constitutional rights envisioned by James Madison
____

Chances are this went right over their heads. I've had this discussion with your average person and realized I've dragged them into an area they can't comprehend. No doubt the council is much the same way. Like a deer in the headlights.

"The Willmette village council is an arrogant, liberal bunch, as evidenced by their regularly televised meetings. And their condescending police chief, like so many other chiefs, is their lap dog."

How very, very true.

This statment is not only pathetic, but a clear indication that the speaker not only suffers from and obvious lack of education and understanding on the subject, but has no problem broadcasting his stupidity to whomever will listen.

Fruthermore, I'd bet money that the speaker is simply citing the
Seriously flawed conclusions provided by the Kellerman Study, which has been proven to have been driven by ideology more than research.

For the record:

By no means is Wilmette largely Jewish. If anything, it's mostly white-guilt WASP. My business partner, a native Wilmettean, (we have a Wilmette office) was for years one of the few Jews in the 'hood and was among a distinct minority at New Trier High School.

Maybe you're thinking of Highland Park, which is further up the North shore?
