the american auto industry is right where it was before the 1970s oil crisis. oil prices are going to be much higher going forward, as the dollar weakens to control the trade deficit. in the meantime, the Japanese and Germans are investing in technology for hybrids and clean diesels which will really hit the US market when the clean diesel fuel rules come in 2007. In the meantime, GM and Ford are boring out V8s and still using overhead valve engines.

Not true. Ford is making fine SOHC and DOHC V8's. GM on the other hand is not. THe LS motors are nice though.
