We have a whole generation that grew up learning about men on the moon from history books and not current events.

His speech probably sounded great to the average person, but anyone with even a passing knowledge of space activity was left awfully confused. For people who know much about the subject it was a little incoherent.
For example, he talked about the crewed exploration vehicle, but made no mention of how to get it to orbit. He talked about retiring the shuttle, but made no mention of a new manned launcher. And NASA might be able to put a couple of urinals in the Johnson space center for the level of funding he is talking about.
And everything that will happen, even start to happen, will be after he leaves office. Unless he knows something about the next four elections the rest of us don't, this anouncement was just empty election year rhetoric.

I will have to disagree with the President on this position. A man going to Mars cannot feel, smell, hear, touch, or taste anything; all they can do is see and we have a device there to do that now. That device works 24 on 7 and can see much better than any astronaut can. And I do not believe in the one step at a time either; the other planets in our solar system are too harsh an environment to support mankind being there even for exploration, they too will require robots which are a fraction of the costs to send out.
