Freedom of Expression Not at Cost of Islam: Abdullah (Saudi Arabia)

JEDDAH, 15 January 2004 — Saudi Arabia will not allow anybody to attack the Islamic faith in the name of freedom of expression, Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, declared yesterday.

“This country will never accept anybody, whoever he may be, to hurt the Islamic faith, in the name of freedom of opinion or any other name,” the crown prince said in an address to the nation aired live on state television.

Prince Abdullah was giving guidelines for the national dialogue forum, which has so far held two sessions in Riyadh and Makkah with the participation of prominent intellectuals and religious experts, including women.

He said the Kingdom would go ahead with its political and economic reforms. “We will not allow anybody to stand in the way of reforms, be it by calling for stagnation or recession or any other reckless adventure,” he said.

Prince Abdullah urged all citizens to work jointly with the government to achieve reforms. “But the state will not allow anybody to destroy national unity or disturb the peace of its people under the pretext of reforms.”

Last year, the Kingdom announced that partial elections to municipal councils would be held for the first time in 2004.

Prince Abdullah announced that the next dialogue in Madinah would discuss issues related to education and women. He commended the last two dialogue sessions, saying they were held in “an atmosphere of good will and mutual respect.” He pledged that the government would take care of the recommendations made by the last two forums.

He called upon Saudis to discuss national matters with wisdom and balance, discarding the intent to show off and gain wanton popularity. He emphasized that the freedom of expression must be used with responsibility.

“We will not leave the security of the nation and the future of its people to the mercy of opportunists, who start with provocation and end with arbitrary demands.”

He highlighted the importance of dialogue and urged participants to follow the principles of dialogue.

Prince Abdullah reiterated the Kingdom’s opposition to extremism, which is disparaged and hated. “Moderateness is the right path,” he said and called upon Saudis to follow the wise, moderate Islamic line.

“It’s the method of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet (peace be upon him).”

He said the Kingdom would remain a free Muslim and Arab nation, with its citizens enjoying honor, security and equality.

Earlier this month, Prince Abdullah received the intellectuals who took part in the Makkah forum. They presented him a copy of the forum’s recommendations. Prince Abdullah congratulated the participants on the success of the event organized by the King Abdul Aziz National Dialogue Center.

“This is a service to religion and the nation; history will not forget your service,” he told the gathering at his palace in Riyadh.

The Makkah forum ended its deliberations with a call for an end to discrimination among citizens and proposals to fight extremism. The recommendations include measures to root out extremism, immediate reform of academic curricula, and more freedom for media.

Jerry Falwell and the Pope would be the two most dangerous individuals in Saudi (if this Abdullah guy would let them visit).

The Prince needs to understand that there is nothing that anyone could say that would hurt the reputation of Islam as much as the things fundamentalist Muslims do every day, such as funding terrorism.

That's a good point.

Saudi Arabia will not allow anybody to attack the Islamic faith in the name of freedom of expression,

And how will they not allow freedom of expression?....death by what means again?

...terror...assassination....kidnapping...rape..torture...murder....mutilation....what ever it takes....

So the reason we are allowing them to build their mosques, islamic centers, and summer camps accross America is why?
