It's been going on since August, when we had DSL. It continued through our ditching of DSL and our return to dial-up, and it persists with cable, which is what makes us think it's an IE problem.

It's still a firewall problem. HTTP and HTTPS use different ports. I don't know what kind of hardware you have or exactly how to fix it in your case, but I would sit on the cable company. Play dumb. Just tell the cable company that their modem isn't working. Make them come out and fix it.

While it's only a temporary fix, I might suggest using a proxy server to access the secure pages.

Query as to whether you want sensitive information going through a different server, but it's certainly more safe than handing your credit card to a waiter you've never seen or heard from at a restaurant.

A really top-notch (and free--no downloads) proxy is available at www.guardster.com. It works pretty well, although I have noticed that sometimes it doesn't display pictures properly.

Anyway, hope this is at least a patch.
