I think it stands for "intersex". Meaning, I think, ambiguous genitalia.
Oddly enough the only ones with a genuine biological excuse are the last to be awarded a political identity...

That's the first I've heard that such unfortunate people are aligned with the GLBT movement. But nothing surprises me anymore in this arena.
