Stallworth sentenced to six months home confinement for federal charge

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Former state Rep. Keith Stallworth was sentenced Tuesday to six months home confinement after pleading guilty to evading federal currency reporting requirements.

The period of home confinement is part of Stallworth's sentence that includes three years of supervised release, 100 hours of community service and a $3,000 fine, said Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office.

Stallworth's attorney Christopher A. Andreoff said his client will have to follow conditions set for him by the federal probation department. But Stallworth will be allowed to go to a job or attend a doctor's appointment under the restrictions, he said.

At his trial last year, Stallworth said he directed another person to purchase four cashiers checks for a total value of $20,000 in March 1998.

Stallworth could have faced up to seven months in jail for the charge.

"I'm very happy that the judge decided against incarceration," Andreoff said.

Stallworth also didn't get any jail time after pleading guilty to a state charge of election law fraud, Andreoff said. The Detroit Democrat was sentenced last year to two years probation and 100 hours of community service, he said.

Stallworth was accused of lying on his voter's registration and driver's license. The state attorney general's office said Stallworth attempted to get a false driver's license in 2000 because a domestic violence conviction prevented him from crossing into Canada to visit his summer home.

Stallworth was elected in November 2002 to the Wayne County Commission. He submitted a letter of resignation in March, then later withdrew the offer to resign.

A Wayne County Circuit Judge said Stallworth lost his seat when he pleaded guilty to a federal felony charge growing out of a drug conspiracy case. That charge was later dropped when Stallworth agreed to plead guilty to the federal currency charge.

He is now attempting to collect enough petition signatures to put it on the state ballott.....

Probably here

Ray Basham probably. I'm suprised he'd go for it since his district is Taylor and parts of downriver. He's also pro-gun.

Bob Emerson is just a lefist hack, and don't even get me started on that ninny Gilda Jacobs(who waved a gun toward a crowd, which ducked, during an anti-gun demonstration).

Yea, Basham is the guy! While I appreciate your comment on his alleged pro-gun support, his attempt now to ban smoking in restaurants and bars certainly sends shivers up my spine and makes me wonder where he is actually coming from......

I don't like this one bit either since I'm a property rights guy, and also am well aware of how organized(and rich) the smoke ban extremist ninnies are.

I'm a property rights supporter. I wouldn't back this piece of junk if they offered to bribe me a year's rent.
