A few weeks ago, I had dinner at the house of a man who has worked as a guard in Sweden's prison system for about six years, and he was trying to convince me that it was rational for Sweden to allow convicted criminals un- supervised time away from prison beginning in their fifth year (I believe). Honestly, they get weekends away and are allowed to go to concerts and stuff. Sickening.

The guy (a friend of my husbands and in every other sense seeming like a perfectly nice guy) kept insisting that it was necessary or how else would the criminals ever get used to living in society again! YIKES!
