Army War College article says invasion of Iraq was 'strategic error'
A report published by the Army War College calls the Bush administration's war on terrorism unfocused and says the invasion of Iraq was "a strategic error."
The research paper by Jeffrey Record, a professor at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, said the president's strategy "promises much more than it can deliver" and threatens to spread U.S. military resources too thin. Record also wrote that Saddam Hussein's Iraq did not present a threat to the United States and was a distraction from the war on terrorism.
Record is a visiting professor at the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. The paper was published last month by the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute.

Perhaps this visiting professor's visit should be cut short.

"The United States may be able to defeat al-Qaeda, but it cannot rid the world of terrorism, much less evil," Record writes. This guy is a genius!

"Record's report concludes that the war on terrorism is too widespread and should focus on al-Qaeda and other terrorist threats to the United States." You tell'm Record, you tell'm....wonder what Party you are registered in.

All these guys that say that we could just go on "containing" Iraq, somehow seem to neglect the tremendous cost of:
1) Maintaining the "No-Fly" zones;
2) Maintaining troops and bases in Saudi Arabia;
3) Maintaining bases in Turkey;
4) Maintaining weapons inspections and oversight;
5) Maintaining the Sanctions on Iraq (which were starting to unravel, and were making the Iraq people pay a heavy price).
6) The moral cost of standing by while Iraq civilians were shredded.
etc, etc, etc,

"SIGH!"
If this Guy is a REAL MEMBER of our "Military;" He would Know--as ALL Members of our Military Know-to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT!!
The VAST Members of our Military understand that They ONLY UNDERSTAND a FRACTION of "The Whole Picture!!"
There Just ISN'T ENOUGH INFORMATION for our "Experts" to give us an "Informed Opinion!!"

I think that you're badly mistaken. Are you espousing the "I'm not responsible - I vas just following mein orders" argument?
I want the military studying these things and having opinions. If military officers are to render good advice to their civilian bosses, then they need to engage in academic debate on historic and current issues.
Record is a civilian with long-standing ties to several influential senators. No one would ever accuse Sam Nunn of being a dove. Then again, the entire Demoncratic party seems to have gone off the rails these days.
Record's paper, in no way, reflects official policy, and reasonable people can make his arugments. I think that his arugments are wrong, but I think that they should not be dismissed simply because he worked for Senators Nunn and Bentsen.

"Sigh."
I'm just trying to say that there are Lots of "Opinions", "Out There" based on inadequate &/or WRONG information,--& that we should be VERY CAREFUL before we form an "Informed Opinion!!"

"The United States may be able to defeat al-Qaeda, but it cannot rid the world of terrorism, much less evil," Record writes. I believe 4 more years of Bush will get rid of this rampant negativity.
It's interesting to see how liberals supported Kennedy when he said "Ask not what your country can do for you..." and yet that is EXACTLY what they expect.
