Cheese war is heating up in Tillamook

(Bay City-AP) -- Since 1975, Dick Crossley has been making beef jerky along the Oregon coast.

And for just as long he's sold his jerky under the name "Tillamook Country Smoker."

But now a battle is raging over the Tillamook name.

The Tillamook County Creamery is trying to trademark the name and use it exclusively for their famous cheddar. It's part of a marketing strategy which hopes to make the cheddar into a national brand.

Last year, Crossley received a "cease and desist" letter telling him to drop the name.

He says that if he lost the name it would be like starting a new business all over again.

It's a struggle for a name that both companies borrowed from the city, the valley, the river, and a coastal Indian tribe.

But now its up to a court to decide who can use it.

Next month, a federal judge will hear arguments in the lawsuit filed by the smoker against the creamery.

I hate stuff like this. If they want him to quit using the name so badly, they should make him an offer to quit using it. Or buy a share of his business. Or just leave him alone.

If they win legally I will never buy their cheese. They will always strike me as bullies.

I knew if I stayed at FR long enough, I'd see the words "cheese" and "war" in the same headline.

I have such an article daily for years. Ok, not really, but if I knew it was that important to you I would have. Well, maybe not. Now all we need is a moose war.

Yep. Like the cheese but that is totally wrong. Nothing pisses me off more than a concerted effort to put people down. Grrrrrr...

I didn't think you could trademark the name of the town. That would be just dumb.... in my town every other business has the town name in it.
