(SAN DIEGO) ; Proposition 187 author, Ron Prince, today endorsed Republican U.S. Senate candidate, Howard Kaloogian (website: www.HowardForSenate.com). Prince joined Kaloogian at a news conference today where they announced their opposition to the proposal by President George W. Bush to grant illegal aliens a three-year or longer amnesty.

"I am honored to have the support of the man who authored Proposition 187, Ron Prince. I stand with him today in opposition to this new amnesty plan for illegal immigrants.

;While President Bush has been a great leader on issues such as taxes, national defense and the fight against terrorism, this proposal granting amnesty on the installment plan for illegal immigrants is the wrong answer to deal with our illegal immigration problem.

"I strongly oppose rewarding those who have broken our nation's laws. My family legally immigrated to this country by waiting for their turn. It is an insult to them and all of those who have obeyed our immigration policies and come to this country legally.

What Washington should first address is the lack of enforcement of our borders. Addressing the source of the problem must be the first priority so that we can begin to get a handle on our illegal immigrant problem. What we need to do is to secure our borders. This is also important for national security, as Canada and Mexico have both repeatedly been entry points for terrorists and terrorist sympathizers.

"Californians suffer when the federal government fails to enforce our borders. Now, Washington seeks to complicate the matter by providing yet another enticement for people to sneak into our country illegally without stopping further illegal entry. We tried amnesty in 1986, and it didn't stop illegal immigration; in fact, the problem became worse. Blanket amnesty didn't work then, and amnesty on the installment plan won't work now.

"California is nearly bankrupt. While we have a near porous border, California taxpayers will keep getting stuck with huge bills. Almost half of the nation's illegal immigration occurs across the California border, and Californians cannot afford it any longer.

"Whether you consider the principle of respect for the law, or weigh the financial cost to California taxpayers, or are fearful for our national security, a secure border is essential. That must be the core foundation of any immigration policy, declared Kaloogian.

Today was a great day - lots and lots of news media showed up for Howard's press conference. 7 TV news cameras and represenatives from several newspaper outfits. Howard has been on several news and talk radio stations and will be on many more tomorrow. He was greeted with a great reception by Roger Hedgecock's audience (he's broadcasting from Sacramento and was a guest on the show today with Ron Prince).

The endorsement of Kaloogian by Prop 187 author Ron Prince surprised us... we knew he'd say nice words about Howard but we didn't realize he'd come out full square for Kaloogian.

Things are really starting to go good guys - I think Howard's well on his way to solidifying the conservative base behind him and is a likely primary winner. We just have to keep spreading the word! To victory!!

I heard them on Roger Hedgecock's show today. One of them mentioned that the other major candidates (presumably Jones, Marin, and Casey) were all supportive of the amnesty and guest-worker proposal, and that only Kaloogian opposed the plan.

Have the other candidates said anything about the amnesty/blue-card plan? I've only heard Jones on Roger's show a few days before President Bush's announcement, and I don't think they touched on the topic of immigration at all.

I think Kaloogian also mentioned something Schwarzenegger trying to get the feds either to jail illegal aliens in federal jails or to give us $1-2 billion to help pay for the costs of incarcerating aliens in our state jails.

Requires state to verify driver's license applicant's identity and lawful presence in United States. Prohibits the state and its political subdivisions from accepting identification documents not issued by a state or federal jurisdiction. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: This measure could result in increased annual costs to the state and local governments in the tens of millions of dollars to verify citizenship or immigration status of persons receiving specified public services. This measure could also result in program savings over $100 million annually to the state and local governments, primarily counties, due to reduced expenditures for certain public services.

Also, what about the VLF (car tax) elimination petition? It was due today, but I haven't heard a thing. Did it die without getting enough signatures? I liked this part of the summary, "Defines "tax" to mean, with certain exceptions, any monetary exaction imposed by a governmental entity."

The exceptions were fees to administer programs, but the VLF (car tax) was clearly a property "tax," not a "fee." Taxes require a 2/3 vote, while fees require 1/2.

They feel emboldened based on the success of the recall and the success the organizers of the SB 60 referendum had at quickly collecting 500,000+ signatures.

My guess is that they are somewhere under 100,000 but not too too far behind that. They recently just started this effort and will be using talk radio to drive people to their website.

Since this is a similar strategy as Kaloogian's campaign and since Kaloogian pledged early on to make immigration a top priority of his campaign you will see a lot of overlap - the same people pushing for Prop 187 II will be Kaloogian supporters and vice versa.

I think Bush and Rove are thinking that they can get credit from Latinos and the liberal media for trying to come up with a compassionate compromise, and by making it so nuanced - instead of just saying "amnesty for illegals" they can cloud the issue enough so that the conservative uproar can be limited.

Or take a moment to research her immigration philosophies while on the city council of Huntington Park and you'll gain still more insight.

I'm sure the research will satisfy this curiosity with respect to at least one candidate.

Casey and Marin support the President's plan - though Casey is now trying to backtrack following Kaloogian's Prop 187 drill today. She says her support for the amnesty plan was a "qualified endorsement."

Marin was mayor of Huntington Park which was a haven for illegal immigrants. She is running as a 'new' kind of Republican and is really bad on illegal alien issues.

Jones was a supporter of Prop 187 but has since backed away from illegal immigrant issues, ducking them during his gubernatorial campaign in 2000. When asked if he opposed the amnesty plan he remarked that he was still studying it.

If I understand correctly the car tax initiative died because it lacked funding, so Schwarzenegger's repeal of the increase was considered a victory and the outright elimination of the VLF was put off for another day.

These battles mark the current intra-party conflicts. The establishment Republicans don't feel comfortable embracing the activism of the base conservative Republicans.

One example was SB 60 - yes the legislature repealed it - but it was on a vote that included Democrats. The reason - because Schwarzenegger made a deal to promise to revisit a new bill from the Democrats that would be a pared down SB 60.

The reason for the deal? Because it was clear the referendum was going to pass. And if that happened then the whole bill would have been stricken from law by the voters (polls showed 67-70% of voters opposed giving drivers licenses for illegal immigrants). So the Democrats knew that their only hope was to strike a deal for Arnold. Let him claim victory through the legislature undoing SB 60 so that they could come back this year with a new SB 60 that they could get Arnold to sign on to. That's why the vigilance of FReepers alike must remain high so that when this comes back up we can be ready to marshall enough public outcry to kill it before we are again stuck with another offensive and bad new law.

IMO, Casey is aggressive, slippery, shallow, and dishonest while Marin is a pliable airhead; who might as well be a cardboard cutout. Bill Jones, well, there's just not much "there" there.

The good news is that it shows in all three cases.

I haven't seen Howard on TV. He comes across great on radio, but then so did McClintock.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already heard about Marin being soft on illegal aliens and that Huntington Park has such a high proportion of aliens. It just seems that I haven't seen any recent quotes from her or the other candidates. Maybe it's just because there haven't been any debates, or the media is all focused on the upcoming Iowa and New Hampshire Democrat caucuses/primaries.

Some Democrats supported Prop 187, since it otherwise wouldn't have passed with 2/3 of the vote. I never heard of Casey before this campaign.

I assume she'll try to hide that aspect. Sen. Feinstein recently talked about trying to get criminal fugutives back from Mexico, but I haven't heard a peep from Boxer, who is probably awful on immigration. It's hard to be worse than Boxer, but so far Marin doesn't sound or look like a strong candidate.

I'm still keeping my eye on Jones as a fallback candidate, in the unlikely case Kaloogian doesn't pan out, but he's looking better every day, and Jones' campaign didn't even have a website the last time I looked.

Maybe Jones was waiting for Kaloogian's opinions before issuing his own, if he views Kaloogian as his competition. I hope Jones will be ready soon, or he'll look like a dismal candidate! The election is less than two months away. I can't wait for the debates.
