Wow, armor that won't work unless turned on...
Great work guys! But how are you going to get our enemies to use it?
To: Valin
This is an attractive idea....

"What we're working with is a class of fluids called magnetorheological fluids," Yawn. Watch out for any hype containg the words "Nanophase". Ferrofluids have been around for decades. About a decade ago, Ferrofluidics Corporation, a pioneer in the field, was the subject of an SEC investigation.
The increase in viscosity and shear due to an applied field, even from a cryogenic electromagnet, will not suffice. There are further limitations in the amount of ferromagnetc material that can be suspended without agglomeration.
The research team hopes that eventually, the fabric-fluid combination could resist a shockwave or shrapnel. ...
And hydrostatically transmit, with high efficiency, the energy to the soldier's tissues.
MIT can go out with a begging bowl with the best of them.
The same general caution applies to MEMS and Hydrogen Energy as well. They are buzzwords, like "Dot Com" and "Multilevel Marketing".

Travis,
I can imagine powering a Saturn 5 rocket with a teaspoon full of pidgeon poop, but the reality is a bit tougher!!!
It would have to be based in NY & DC as that is where we are storing the fuel!

What effect, do you suppose, all of these electromagnetic fields are going to have on all of the other soldier-portable electronic gizmos that are also in the works?

"one nanotechnologist says that instant armor could be real in ten years. "
Well, if they asked Wes Clark how to do it, he could have the answer for them in 5 minutes! After all, he's going to prevent ANY further terrorist attacks and knows how to kill/capture Osama Bin-Dikhead!
Dat Wes--He Knows EVERYTHING!!! (NOT)
