That's probably just an accumulation of the number of unique visitors each day. My guess is the number of unique visitors per day varies between 40,000 to 70,000 and on really big news cycles can go as high as 100,000 to 125,000.

I remember some of the "I'm leaving FR" posts. There doesn't seem to be the volume (and quality) of those going away posts anymore.

Yes, when was the last time you saw a good opus? The one or two last ones I read were from persons that had hardly ever posted before. I do miss A+Bert. His one-liner vanity opus couldn't be beaten even if he did keep coming back for months afterwards. The good ones were dramatic, and the dear soon-to-be-departed kept replying to everyone for hours.
