(CHARLESTON) – On Saturday, the American Federation of Teachers confirmed that their choice in the Republican primary was the former Secretary of Tax and Revenue, Rob Capehart.

Capehart who is the frontrunner in the Republican primary is the only candidate to receive the endorsement of both the state’s teachers unions. Secretary Capehart was endorsed over Dan Moore who also interviewed. Capehart received the endorsement of the West Virginia Education Association in November.

“It is a great honor to receive the backing from both the WVEA and AFT. Education has been a focal point in my campaign. My goal as Governor is to work with our teachers, so the diploma earned by every graduate in West Virginia can be a passport to prosperity, reflecting the highest standards of excellence in the classroom”, said Capehart.

Capehart, who serves as Associate Professor and the Director of Tax Studies at Marshall University, has said education would be a high priority within his administration and agrees that it is the key to economic development in the state.

Campaign Manager, Jeremy Maynard said of the endorsement, “this endorsement does not surprise us. Rob means what he say’s about education. On both side’s of the aisle, Rob is the only candidate that has given specific proposals about the serious issues facing West Virginia”.

In October, Capehart outlined a specific plan on Higher Education with his “Pioneer College” proposal. He will visit with West Virginia University President, David Hardesty on Monday.

Good to see a Democrat not get these endorsements. However do these endorsements mean a continued future of throwing money at a problem that has not been solved despite millions having been previously spent on the problem?

WV is bankrupt now if you factor in the unfunded pension, health insurance, and work comp liabilities. The state needs someone to address these fundamental budget issues and focus on reducing the welfare state created for public employees by past governors and legislators in an effort to buy votes and maintain their fiefdoms.

Capehart may be the lessor of two evils in that he is a
Republican, but recycling Democratic programs will not
solve the state's problems. I would be more encouraged if his education plan called for abolishment of the State Board of Education, the WVEA, and returning decision making control over curriculum, standards, and financing
back to the local school districts.

Good to see a Democrat not get these endorsements.

The endorsements are for the GOP primary, not the general election.

And calling Capehart the lesser of two evils seems a little harsh to me.
