[history]
The Elk Grove City Council hadn't found itself in such a situation before.
The housing proposal before it wasn't a typical Elk Grove single-family subdivision, but an array of town houses and attached single-family clusters. Neighbors (saying they preferred a large office complex on the land, but also fearful of what would happen to their property values) said this was too much housing (about 250 units on 18 acres) for the land, which sits smack on Bighorn Boulevard just south of Laguna Boulevard. Yet this wasn't too much housing at all. For land on a busy street that is within walking distance of future offices, existing stores, a movie complex and possibly some day a light rail line, this is precisely the kind of compact, affordable style of ownership housing that makes sense.

I use to fly into and out of tiny little Sunset Sky Ranch in Elk Grove simply because it was located so far out into the country (and because it was outside the Sacramento TCA). It was also a great airport to watch vintage WW-II aircraft being rebuilt. In those days the town was small and populated with valley "good old boys", some of whom weren't too shy about wearing their kkk signet rings. I really liked that airport, but the town had all the charm of Black Rock!
It sure ain't a little town anymore!

It sends a signal to builders that it's OK to build something other than a big house on a lot in Elk Grove. The Sac Bee never met a sprawling low-income housing project it didn't like.

**"Elk Grove sells out to Sustainable Development." **
I have lived in Elk Grove for 12 years and am somewhat active in the community. I know the two main city council members and I can definately say they aren't looking at the big picture for a healthy long term plan of growth. There needs to be a slowdown in building. It's really out of control, imo. We're looking at the possibility of leaving this area.

SO true.

**Sunset Sky Ranch **
It's still there. Soon it will have a neighbor..namely a mega WalMart. sigh.
To: farmfriend
Densification. The environmentalists are pushing this in every community in California.

Where the turkey farm used to be located?
Is that gigantic propane storage farm still near by?

I think there's still a turkey farm on Arno Road. The propane tanks are off Grantline. A few years ago some nuts were arrested. Seems they had plans to blow them up. How special. :o/
The Laguna area (west of Hwy99 east of Hwy5)was once cattle country, now a sea of houses, strip malls, 3 hotels and city streets.

I think McClintock lives here, as do Bustamonte and Ray Haynes (former State Senator now Assemblyman).
To: mrs tiggywinkle
"A sea of houses". Darn, you just gave me the shivers.

No. He represents Thousand Oaks, down in Ventura County.
