Program Can Be Completed In One Year

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State University will soon offer a masters degree in homeland security, 10News reported.

"I think 9-11 has shown us that we're vulnerable. We can take that vulnerability and learn from it," said Debbie Richeson, an SDSU student who plans to earn a masters degree in homeland security. "It would be irresponsible not to do something with that knowledge and make ourselves stronger as a country."

The students will spend a lot of time at the cutting edge Visualization Center. It will be an important training ground for future experts in homeland security.

During the Super Bowl, the homeland security technology was tested.

"We hooked up a camera here with a wireless communication network and we could see what the person was seeing," said Homeland Security Projects Director Bob Welty. "We had sensors down in the riverbed looking for nuclear, biological or chemical weapons. We had cameras monitoring the general area for people."

Faculty from the Visualization Center and many other departments at SDSU will share their knowledge with the homeland security graduate students.

The 30-unit program can be completed in one year.

The Homeland Security Masters Program will begin this fall.

The deadline for fall admission is May 10.
