But which direction should the tanks deployed to Poland point (east of west)?

Cool. It is time to abandon old Europe and embrace new Europe. Stay close with Britain and tell the rest of the Euro-scum to go pound sand.

They have been in gestation since long before the Iraq war, and Washington officials insist they are not punishing Germany for opposing the toppling of Saddam Hussein. And if you buy that, I've got a real bargain for you!

It will be interesting to see how they allocate troops to Eastern Europe. If they just move them over there, or move the all thet anks over there and keep three or four primed Brigade Combat Teams in places like Poland, and the Russians do not make much noise it could mean that we are actually working out a
AndRussia is in on it.
Now the question is: does Germany go nuclear?
Just what are we signaling here?

sorry Working out=working out a containment strategy for France and Germany.

Good timing. Let's take those tank divisions and set them up along the Mexican-American border...
Oops -- no we can't do that. That might make us appear serious about enforcing the border from the ongoing illegal invasion.

Some important US facilities will remain in Germany, including the giant Ramstein air base No. I insist we fold this up and take this home.
Is every journalist rawly incompetent, or what?

It would be up to the main recipents of German attention in WW II: Poland and France. Poland is probably okay with this in the present situation. France probably doesn't care.

Washington officials insist they are not punishing Germany Darn, I was hoping this was to punish the nazi slugs.

Units will return to the US, although Washington plans new bases in Poland, Bulgaria and the Baltic States through which troops would move to future trouble spots. I hope Satan has a subscription to the Telegraph, so he can give Joe Stalin the news.

Well I think that the French would be quite disturbed if they thought they could not control the Germans, which of course they cannot (though I doubt it occurred to Chirac that his silliness might have awaken a "sleep bridge-troll," as it were, by encouraging an assertive Germany under his wing.) France is currently the only nuclear power on the Continent, a point that they are insistent on making in every conversation of this sort. I imagine that they will start howling at the moon in Paris if Berlin starts building a nuclear triad. The nations that would be quite upset would be Russia, the UK and Italy, IMHO.
It will be interesting to see what happens if the SDS and the Greens get thrown out this year, and Schroeder is left hanging until 06. If the CDC comes back into power and Bush is reelected then they may just kiss and makeup, and then this is all mostly theater. Still, it will be pleasant to see the Euros actually face up to the real implications of a fed up USA. I almost think it never occurred to them what the actual implications were.
