Former Louisville teacher charged with molesting two students Associated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A former teacher who worked at public and religious schools in the Louisville area has been charged with molesting two boys in the 1970s.
Bill Maggard, Jr., 56, faces three counts of first-degree sexual abuse. He is accused of molesting two boys between 1973 and 1975, when he was a fifth-grade teacher at Schaffner Elementary School.
Maggard was indicted Dec. 17. He pleaded innocent at his Dec. 22 arraignment and later posted a $5,000 bond.
A pretrial conference is set for Jan. 23 in Jefferson Circuit Court.
Maggard taught 13 years in Jefferson County Public Schools and later worked at a school operated by Highview Baptist Church, where he also volunteered in Sunday school and choir programs until recently.
The 6,000-member church is one of the state's largest Southern Baptist congregations.
The Rev. Kevin Ezell, pastor of Highview, said he knew of no allegation against Maggard. When Maggard signed up for volunteer work about seven years ago, a routine criminal background check showed no allegations, he said.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Anne Haynie said she would seek more information from both the school system and the church for Maggard's trial.
The indictment charges Maggard with two counts of abusing one boy between August 1973 and June 1974 and a third count of abusing a second boy between August 1974 and June 1975, according to Haynie. Both the alleged victims were students at Schaffner, Haynie said.
The case surfaced when a member of the Highview congregation, who knew of allegations of abuse by Maggard, was concerned about his being in contact with children in the church.
She contacted the alleged victims and encouraged them to go to police, Haynie said.
Maggard taught from 1969 to 1975 at Schaffner and from 1975 to 1982 at Williams Middle School, then left the district, said Lauren Roberts, a school district spokeswoman.
Maggard "was employed very briefly" at Highview Baptist School (now Whitefield Academy), according to attorney Jay Turner, who represents Highview Baptist Church and Ezell. Turner said he did not have Maggard's exact job description but that he was not a teacher.
Maggard resigned from his Sunday school position in August or September, Turner said, adding he didn't know if he had done so at the church's request. Maggard resigned from a church choir around the time of his indictment, Turner and Ezell said.

Why to the headline scream out "Molestation" when a male teacher does this.
But yesterdays story told about a female teacher who was arrested for a "relationship" with an 11 year old boy did not.
To: jimt
Yea, there's no statute of limitations on molestation, but there is on rape. Remember, Mrs. Juanita Broaddrick let the statute of limitations expire before she accused her president of raping her in 1978.

30 years ago ? You got a problem with that?
To: Theodore R.
She did not LET the statute run out. She was askef to testify.
HER president. Sheesh.

Why? Because the headline writers are feminist idiots.

Well, she could have "testified" in 1992 and saved the country 8 years of clintonism, or maybe they would have voted ClintonGore anyway. And she was a Clinton supporter and fundraiser: presumably she had a change of heart after the "attack."

before she accused her president of raping her in 1978.
Clarification: before in 1999, when she accused her president of having raped her in 1978, at which time he was the AR attorney general and Democrat gubernatorial candidate.

Oh yeah. Testify against the standing governor in a state while he is running for president. I'm sure the media would have gone easy on her like they did Gennifer Flowers.
The media would have crucified her and she'd probably be dead right now.

You got a problem with that? If it's been 30 years, with no reoccurences indicating a pattern, I start wondering how true the charges might be. Sexual predators don't typically go cold turkey. Usually the recidivism rate runs pretty close to 100%, even after they've been busted and jailed.
It's awfully damn hard to find evidence to support the defense when the crime was 30 years ago.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought only murder had no statute of limitations.

Remember what you said next time someone who's religion is other than "Baptist" has 30 year old charges thrown at him.
To: jimt
I suppose that it is state law that determines what crimes have a statute of limitations in that jurisdiction.
Treason has no statute of limitations either.
Actually, I think tax evasion is also free of such a statute of limitations, but unofficially the IRS goes back only three years for audits and new investigations.

She should have come forward in 1978 and perhaps even prevented a Clinton gubernatorial administration. Imagine how she could have changed history.

Dude was a Sunday School teacher at a Baptist church. I sort of ass-u-me that Baptists Churches get Baptists to teach Sunday School. Whaddaya think?
Many of the charges of sexual molestation hurled at Catholic Priests in the last few years were also 30 years old. This includes the charges against the egregious Geoghan and Shanley (who were guilty as sin) as well as other cases in which the charges ranged from totally false to exaggerated to unverifiable to totally true.
