Yeah,ping.
I just feel NASA is dropping the ball on this one.
They've got time to drag these folks out for childrens interviews but any real briefing is limited to once a day/
five days a week?

Don't mean to grouse,just Jonesing.

Ah, now the Presidents address for the unptheenth time.
NASA TV needs help.

Bob Ross, is he one of those guys that paints with a 4" brush and one of those putty knives that I use to scrape off wallpaper?

I love watching those guys make trees with a putty knife. Simple pleasures for a simple mind I guess.

I saw a blurb in an article that said the rover started getting it's wheels mucked up with that stuff as soon as it exited the ramp. So whatever it is, it seems to be all over the area.

After an extensive Google News search last night on every report since Jan 14, 2004 that contain the words "adirondack", "sashimi", "sushi", and "edamame", I believe I have been able to figure out which rocks go with which names. Keep in mind, the only one I am fairly sure of is "Adirondack" because the descriptions of the named rocks are not very precise and NASA has not released any sort of map, as they did with Pathfinder back in 1997. Here are the descriptions of each rock as best as I could come up with:

"Adirondack" is a 2-inch rock that is about 10 feet to the Northwest of Spirit that is roughly pyramid shaped and has a vertical face that has apparently been scoured clean by the Martian winds.

"Sashimi" is a 1-inch whitish rock with a pillow shape, is roughly 10-15 feet in front of the rover, and appears to be made of totally different minerals than Adirondack.

"Sushi" is right next to "Sashimi" and is called "Sushi" because it reminds the researchers of a sushi roll.

"Edamame" is a smaller rock that is right next to Sushi. It is the final rock in the trio that researchers are calling the "Wasabi Feature".

According to the latest news reports, scientists have selected "Adirondack" as the next target for Spirit rather than "Sashimi". However, because of the location of "Adirondack", I anticipate that photos of "Sushi" (aka "Rectangle Hole Rock") taken when Spirit arrives at "Adirondack" will be excellent in determining whether or not "Sushi" really does have a hole in it. Once Spirit is at "Adirondack", any photos taken of "Sushi" should be looking directly into the "hole".

I have checked the latest updated pictures on the MER homepage, however, no new pictures of "Sushi" are present. If previous days are any indication, the next update to the MER homepage should be around 12-1 AM EST tonight. If any new pictures are available I will post them and do another update.

Post-disclaimer post:

The magic carpet the crash bag dragged up could be salty from the lake a billion years ago, and salt attracts moisture, so it might pull what little moisture there is from the air and ground, enough to give the layer some coherent stickiness.

I can't wait until they get the results of this weekends testing. They should know by Monday what the soil is composed of and hopefully what makes it so sticky. If it is because there is salt present, then this will be huge news.
