Bush speaks fluent, almost flawless, Spanish.

When is going to learn how to speak flawless English?

Actually, Bush's proposal is pretty much in line with the ambivalence many Texans feel about illegal immigrants.

Anglos were the first illegal immigrants into Texas, when it was part of Mexico, and we consider ourselves to be OK folks. So it is not so surprising that we consider the people who come here from Mexico, looking for work, to also be OK. By far, the majority of them are. They work hard, are honest, and take care of their families.

Those who complain just don't want to compete with someone who actually wants to work.

Look at how Bill O'reilly responded to Bush's immigration policy. O'reilly blasted Bush. O'reilly was so right.
We need troops on the border and these illegals should not be made citizens. Rush supports the Republicans to blindly. The best person to lead the Republicans in Tom Tancredo. He will put troops on the border. He should be the leader of the Republicans hopefully by 2008.

At least I know when I make a mistake - Bush doesn't know the language. Is it a Texas thing?

The man has a plan and he intends to use it. Like all of Bush's agenda time seems to prove him right.

Let me ask this. I know its 4 years down the road. But all Republicans should back Tom Tancredo as there leader. He is the man that hopefully will be the Republican nominee in 2008. I pray Jeb Bush is not the person the Republicans want. He supports all these illegal Cubans. Tancredo is also a great speaker. Man, if this guy ever became President, I guarantee you, the illegal Mexican immigrants would stop.
All people have to do is look at Korea. There are 30,000 American troops on the border with North Korea. There's a Barbared wire electric fence separating North and South Korea. Do you notice how few North Korean infiltrators there have been in the last 50 years. We need a President that will put troops on the border. Tancredo is also strong on the war on terror and having a strong military.

I expect that how much it'd cost you to get a legal worker depends on where you are. I will point out that it's been my observation that the day-laborers are far more prevalent in the high cost-of-living areas, where $150K buys you a townhouse in bad neighborhood (infested with those same day laborers, I might add).

In Fredericksburg, VA, my brother used to make $12/hour (before taxes) installing commercial windows/doors, if that gives you an idea--and he was good at what he did.

In the same town, I was paying a legal worker $25/hour for side work involving new siding, kitchen counter replacement, front door replacement, bathroom remodel, etc--skilled labor compared to picking up debris and putting it in a trailer. Probably worth an extra $10/hour.

Bush doesn't know the language. Is it a Texas thing?

He seems to make himself understood pretty well.

Saddam got the message. Ghadaffi got the message. Assad is getting the message. The Democrats are getting the message.

The American public seems to understand him.

How come you don't?

Is it a function of whatever state you live in (which state you haven't put on your FR "about" page).

Ashamed of where you live?

Is the Lincoln Bedroom still available?

Maybe Tancredo can get his legislation up and in the mix now..... Seems there are many elements of what the President talked about in it and can become a starting point.....

Well, anyone can use the political pandering ploy others are using against President Bush, and claim that Bill O'Reily isn't at all sincere in his beliefs, but is only saying what he says in order to gain viewers and more ad revenue.

The military is used to repel invasions, and this is not an invasion. We are not at war with Mexico, and economic refugees are not enemy combatants. Otherwise private citizens would be entitled to shoot down unarmed women and children at the border. Those who advocate machine gunning unarmed women and children at the border are no better than the East German border guards who shot and killed their own people for wanting to escape their country, ostensibly for the very same reason others here are whining about: how immigrants (or emigrants) are draining the treasury. At least here we can deny illegal immigrants many services if we want to, whereas in East Germany when a doctor fled his country for the West there was a resulting loss in their available resources.

Too late for Has-Been Tom. Once 2008 comes around there won't be any illegal immigration if President Bush's proposals become law.

LOL!! Tom Tancredo is a congressman from Colorado. How the hell is he "strong on the war on terror"?

Tancredo will certainly get the votes of Glenn Spencer and the American Patriot crowd, but he has no broad appeal.

So, your experience can be summed up thus (ignoring the ethnicities of the involved workers, since they don't matter):

The $8/hour worker wouldn't do it.

The $12.50/hour worker wouldn't do it.

But the $15/hour worker would.

That doesnt quite sum it up yet. The american worker would have to be paid 18-20/hour, working the same hours, to equal the 15 paid under the table.

but really it is nationwide

At $15 an hour with the promise of a full day I could probably get you a crew of a couple hundred on short notice in the NYC area. I don't have any need to hire any, but some of the contractors I know have pointed all the spots out to me, it's amazing. Heading to my buddy's marina on Staten Island, in about a mile and a half, you see at least a hundred first thing in the morning.
