>>If a person overstaying their temporary visa decides to fade into the society, how would you go about finding them?<<

My sincere, not sarcastic, question is this:

If we have that problem now, and we do, why should we expect that after allowing untold numbers of more immigrants in, that they will not overstay THEIR legal status, thus compounding the problem, and so on, and so on, and so on?

It seems to me that what Bush has said does not address this very fundamental issue. Maybe I missed it, honestly. But I think this is a legitimate concern.

Again, what do we do about the millions already here?

Bush inherited this problem, he did not invent it, nor did he personally escort them in.

Now, we are all pissed about these ten million illegal aliens hiding in society.

How do we go about identifying, arresting, and deporting ten million people without violating every civil and constitutional right we hold dear?

And I'm not talking about the constitutional rights of illegal aliens, I'm talking about the constitutional rights of the rest of us who will have to live through it.

I think this policy has very little to do with solving the "illegal immigration" issue. What this is an H-1B replacement policy wrapped up in an illegal immigration solution package. Illegal immigrants have absolutely no incentive to sign up for these visa's. They already are working here and getting paid under the table and they do not have to pay taxes. Most likely they are getting paid better as illegal. What this is a work visa program that will enable any company to hire any worker from any country in America. This is his gift to corporate America, he added the aspect about illegal immigrants so that the real issue is not even on most peoples radar screen.

There was a time not all that very long ago, when migrant workers from Mexico would come inti the US, earn a living working the fields, then return home until the next harvest season.

Somewhere along the way, we decided to stop this practice, but they still needed those jobs, and the employers here still wanted their labor.

Instead of doing the logical thing, and allowing the employer hire the willing employee, we created a situation where these people came, and stayed.

The Bush proposal addresses this, the willingness to do the work, and the desire to hire the employee.
