Given the current situation, it is amazing that so many conservatives believe that illegal aliens and their employers are suddenly going to abide by the conventions of this new program.

This legislation proposed by Bush is going to be good for the American ecomomy and should be supported. What it does is create a new source for temporary labor.

Many franchises & factories would like to use immigrant labor, but are unwilling to risk problems with the INS. (Companies such as McDonalds, Wal-Mart or Kraft.) An added bonus is this bill would REQUIRE that immigrants return home after the visa expires in order to apply for a new one. Thus, it guarantees that by the time workers start to demand better pay, they have to leave.

We can expect labor costs for these companies to lower significantly...thus passing the savings to the consumer and increasing stock-holder dividends.

Let's not critisise Bush for helping to lower labor costs for our nations biggest employers, it only helps the Democrat party, Socialists and other enemies of America.

The native born American population is, I think, declining. Or at least forcast to do so.

So what would this country look like in 75 years if we put up a huge fence in the desert and prevented any significant immigration?

My guess is, that as the population aged, and our economy shrank, it would soon go into permanent depression. Our grandchildren would live about as well as our grandparents lived in 1910.

I believe that the best way to keep an economy growing is to continue to allow working people into this country.

My only beef is that I think we should allow Europeans an equal shot at coming here. And EVERYBODY needs to learn and speak English, and be Americans.

I especially like the 'shoot to kill' part! We could arm the UAV's with missiles that could be launched into any suspicious vehicle or group of individuals crossing the border. Or, we could just pay vigilante's a bounty for each man/woman/child caught crossing the border illegally. This would be a great way to show our superior humanity to the tyrants of the world whom we are removing from power with our military. /sarcasm

Get real.

The attraction for illegals are jobs, or income not available in their home countries. We need to do the following: Hold employers of illegals accountable for costs these employees cause. Such costs are currently born by taxpayers. Schooling for children, medical care for employees, spouses, children and other family members, etc. are all part to be covered by an employer, as employers willing to hire illegals are in fact magnets of attracting immigrants.
Relatives, Friends, Organisations including non- profits, or political groups engaged in bringing foreigners including legal immigrants to this country are accountable for their well-being and no longer should be allowed to push these costs onto taxpayers backs.
We should not buy into reasons of no native is willing to do these jobs as:
a) Illegals are the primary direct cause of deteriorating pay scales for manual, unskilled, and skilled labor.
b) One needs only look at the annual money transfers to Mexico which has turned into a lucrative incentive for the Mexican Government.
Yes to immigrants, but not on the backs of taxpayers.
With a work permit card (which can not be falsified) plus border control, strictly enforced returns to their native countries if caught without permits, retro- active expense assessments of employers, organisations, relatives etc. we will be able to stem this flood of inpouring population. If allowed to continue, within less than 8 years we will wind up with another 12 million illegals and keep getting filled up with by these 8 million within less and less of a time span.

I have absolutely no desire to learn to speak Spanish! none, zilch, nadda, zero....nor do will I ever be convinced illegal is now legal...what a crock of political crap. I suppose it's to be expected as most politicians are in it for themselves and not the people.

I can't say I agree that the headshot border-enforcement policy is the way to go. Nevertheless, I agree that the current hands-off policy isn't working and that Bush's deceptive plan would make things 10 times worse.

I can still remember the long lines of people signing up for amnesty in LA not many years ago. Are all these new illegals the people who have jumped the border since then? In other words the problem continues to worsen, while our government says we need these workers. Why doesn't the government come look at what LA has turned into, the third world. Even the good neighborhoods in this area are starting to feel like another country. Where do I move to in order to live with Americans? I'd move to Yosemite, but the government has practically ruined all the restaurants there.
