"We had a C-5 at Travis in 1989 that was doing closed pattern touch and go training when a fire broke out in the upper aft troop compartment."
I remember that incident - they then began requiring a crew member to make periodic inspections of the aft troop seat area during flight. I wasn't AF but accompanied a lot of shipments of "hardware" on C-5s - usually, the crew allowed me to ride up front.

Not many know that the entire "1st flight" made by the Wright Brothers could have taken place inside a C5 with room to spare.
