Science is a terrible thing; it makes you think. They've been trying to develop vaccines for malaria, which is almost completely caused by infection with protozoa from four species of the genus Plasmodium, for quite a while to no avail. Anopheles mosquitoes transmit this protozoan parasite.

DDT, judiciously applied, does quite a nice job in controlling malaria and other mosquito borne illnesses.

The best indication I have is that DDT reduced mites on birds that induce them to die of pneumonia.

If DDT were such a threat to birds, then perhaps the enviros can explain why their own data indicate that bird populations INCREASED during DDT production and use.

DDT was "most injudiciously" applied during the Fifties. The FedGov (note, NOT private users) distributed HUNDREDS OF TONS of DDT-laced cornmeal from aircraft in an attempt to prevent the spread of the fire ant. Heaven only knows what other/similar programs went on back in those days.

The CORRECT answer was/is not to BAN "DDT", but to limit its usage to those applications where it is/was most advantageous (malaria and termite control).

Rachel Carson, with some 300,000 fully preventable malaria deaths to her credit, has caused the deaths of more people than Stalin, Chairman Mao, Hitler, and Pol Pot combined. Which handily explains why she's such a darling of the population-control left.
