Dean and his amazing cyber Teflon coat
Hill News ^ | 1/8/04 | Dick Morris

Posted on 01/08/2004 7:08:27 AM PST by areafiftyone

Very few presidential candidates could survive the pounding that Howard Dean has taken in recent weeks. As the front-runner in the Democratic nomination process, he has been the object of a virtual daily barrage of articles slamming him and questioning his judgment.

Some of the shots come from his political opponents, but many more come from the media. The political writers are instinctively eager to investigate a front-runner and are especially eager to stop Dean's momentum because they fear rightly that he can't beat George W. Bush. But other problems are self-created. Dean seems not to realize that everything he says is news copy and that it will be interpreted in the worst light possible.

But recent polls indicate that Dean has a narrow lead still in Iowa, holds a healthy edge in New Hampshire and has stayed in first place nationally among Democratic candidates. How has he done it?

Pause for a moment to consider the range of shots and self-inflicted wounds he has survived:

His refusal to release his records from his time as Vermont's governor.

His skiing after flunking his draft physical.

Saying that capturing Saddam Hussein did not make us safer.

Calling on Americans not to prejudge Osama bin Laden.

Seeking the vote of people with Confederate-flag decals.

Claiming his brother was killed while in the military; he wasn't.

And those are just in the past few weeks!

What is holding Dean aloft? I believe his political buoyancy reflects his mastery of the Internet as a political tool. He is being attacked in the media but is answering online.

The level of intimacy between the Dean campaign and his supporters is extraordinary, fed by a constant stream of e-mails explaining his positions, answering attacks and passing out the party line. While the news media hammer at him, his backers stay in line, nurtured and fed in a way that pre-Internet candidates could only dream about.

Dean has already proved the superiority of the Internet as a fundraising tool. By outraising all his opponents in each of the past three quarters, he has shown that campaign-finance reform is not some distant legislative vision but a practical reality. He has proved that it is easier, cheaper, faster and more profitable to raise clean money in small donations online than dirty money from PACs and wealthy donors in pursuit of special access.

But using the Internet to raise money to buy television commercials is like using an air force to ferry troops into combat. It can do that, but it can do so much more.

Dean is only beginning to educate us on the impact of the Internet. When the votes are cast in the Iowa caucuses, I believe, he will achieve a level of turnout and an intensity of support that dwarfs that which can be stimulated by conventional media, mailing or phoning campaigns.

It is not easy to vote in the Iowa caucuses. One must go to a meeting, often at some distance from home, stay for one to two hours, vote on a range of procedural motions, learn the slate of delegates to support and stick around to vote for them. Dean's slight edge in Iowa will most likely translate into a big win because his supporters, cultivated through constant, interactive e-mail communication, will have the motivation to stick it out and make their votes felt on caucus night.

The only serious threat Dean faces if he wins Iowa is that after knocking out Rep. Richard Gephardt there, pushing Sen. John Kerry out of the race in New Hampshire and destroying Sen. John Edwards's bid by capturing South Carolina, that he will suddenly find himself in a three-way race against Sen. Joe Lieberman and Wesley Clark. It is one thing for this leftist candidate to prevail against a nine-way field, but will his base extend far enough to prevail in a three-way fight?

My bet is it will and that Dean will go on to win the nomination. The Internet provides a virally growing political base that can expand rapidly as Dean's momentum accelerates all the way to the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

I first thought that Dean was going to flatten all the democratic nominees but now I am not so sure. I now think that it's going to be a tight squeeze for Dean because of Clark. Apparently Clark is pushing his way in at break-neck speed. Weasely Clark may even win the nomination at this rate.

"Weasely Clark may even win the nomination at this rate."

I agree. Despite his impressive lead, Dean is far from home free.

As Iowa Hawk put it, though, the Sleaze Wing of the Democrat party is on the march against Dean's Insanity Caucus. Dean is no longer the media darling. And, at the Clintons' behest, no doubt, they are "on his case".

While Dean's base is clearly a plurality of the Democrat party, his opposition will eventually coalesce around a single candidate -- most likely Hillary's sock puppet, The Weasley One.

Terry McAwful's job will thus be saved. But it will be fun to watch the Deaniacs set fire to the Fleet Center as Weasley is giving his acceptance speech...

Dean will not get the nomination. If Morris says he will, that's the kiss of death.

You could be right, he's surging right now. I know dyed in the wool Democrats that wont vote for Dean in any circumstance. His days of flying under the radar could be over.

Hey when too much sh't is thrown on the wall from both Democrats and Republicans, nothing sticks. Dean loyalists feel any enemy of all these politicians must be my friend. When both Bush and Clinton supporters want you gone, you must be doing something right.

Conservative Republicans should have shut up until after any nomination. Right now they have neutralized the sh't.

The usual suspects are 'for Dean' because "he's cute looking"....and that is what these nano second-bites, uneducated people think a president should be - cute! The American tragedy...dumbed down comic book educated voters.

Dean is Bill Clinton. What a scary thought... having another episode of Clinton in the White House. Ugh!

Morris didn't say Dean will get the nomination. He said, "My bet is it will (Dean's base can expand enough to prevail in a three-way fight between Dean, Lieberman, and Clark) and that Dean will go on to win the nomination."

That makes sense to me also. Lieberman and Clark are just too weak to beat Dean. If I had to bet that's the way I'd go. That's not the same thing as saying he *will* win.

Also, Morris brings up (for the first time I've seen) the point that Dean's supporters are gonna overwhelm the others at the Iowa caucuses.

Based on what we've seen Dean's supporters so far, that makes sense to me also. (all the Iowan Bush-haters can't wait to get to the caucuses and stand up for their hero). Even though if everyone voted, Gephardt would win easily, Gephardt (sp?) supporters are much more inclined to stay home and watch TV on caucus night.

I think this phenomenon is prevalent among democrat voters. How many democrat women were envious of Monica? A lot of democrat "men" too for that matter.

I also heard that some Repubs are sooo disguntled with Bush that they probably will vote Clark. Imagine voting for a General who made his career in the army and is saying he is against the war! He should have made his career in the SALVATION ARMY instead! People are real stupid to vote for this guy!

It would depend on whether or not Dean endorses the candidate and campaigns actively for the ticket...but it's also curious that Nader is holding off on running as a Green...

This is nothing compared to what was thrown at Bush in the 2000 primaries... Remember the whole "gravitas" and the "dumb" thing. What amazes me is this guy is just splitting up the dim party but the press is calling him a uniter...:)
