Senate majority leader confident immigration reform will be approved

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Wednesday he was confident U.S. President George W. Bush's immigration reform legislation would be approved by Congress.

Bush called for a major overhaul of America's immigration system Wednesday. The proposal would grant temporary legal status to millions of undocumented workers in the United States.

Creating a government tracking system with an approved list of workers changes nothing. You are still back to the dilemma of the employee saying my name is Joe Blow and here is my "ha hah ID" It is no better than the terrorist watch list that a 6 year old girl with the same name as a terrorist hold up a flight in Paris. Biometric ID is the only answer.

Most states collect a finger print now on first time drivers licenses.... So the Gov't could collect that data in some fashion. If the program is going to work then like you said they have to have a good system. Otherwise it's the same ol' same oh only with a different name....

Heck maybe this will become the test ground for the implanted chip under the skin......

In all of the arguments about "work Americans won't do" or " Americans WOULD do it if you paid a 'living wage' " there is factor often overlooked and that is that no matter what the base wage level whoever is working at that wage is most likely from the bottom of the employment barrel. Illegals are often preferred employees because they want those jobs badly and have gone to some length to get them, and they will work harder to keep them. Yes - these are stereotypes - but stereotypes often come from real world fact.

Yep, it's a fact. If we put Want Ads in the paper to hire Americans to pick tomatoes in California, the ads would go unanswered.

The fact is that few Americans would be turned down for such a job. I'd like to hear the story of Americans who have been. It might change my mind.

So much for the assurances I got from the RNC, when I emailed them my complaint about amnesty for illegals. Here was their reply.

Thank you for contacting the RNC. I encourage you to look up Secretary of State Powell's recent comments that there will be, in effect, no immigration amnesty through Congress next year. The administration, as far as we know, in no way supports illegal immigration - the Sec. Of State's comments reflect this. There is word that a strengthening of our borders is in the works in the very near future.

So basically they lied? The US has the power to transport an army to the middle east and completely replace the regime of a country. IF the will existed the borders could and would be duly protected immediately. The will does not exist ..it obviously does not exist. "There is word that a strengthening of our borders is in the works in the very near future." I suppose that a new ice age will come about and a glacier will come down the Rio Grande and protect the border..that's about likely and would take so long....

One point.. With a majority, Bush could not do anything about the conservative judges. Who do you think Dean is going to send up there and who is going to be legislating the laws that are already in force for everyone of the issues you are concerned about. I dont even think one can dream of voting for Dean unless you are a democrat....

Therein lies the rub, my friend.

My wife has (legal) Mexicans who work as subcontractors installing carpet, etc. They work for 11 months of the year, and then go back to Mexico for a month or so to AVOID PAYING INCOME TAXES. I don't know exactly what the rule is on that, but that's what they tell people.

If I heard right, part of Bush's proposal was to make it easier for them to go back and forth across the border.

One part of the "plan" that I liked was the "guaranteed" wages and benefits. How many places would hire them if they had to pay $15/hr. with insurance? Also--will these temporary workers have to pay taxes for the first few years?

OMG, what a brilliant point, I didn't even notice that. Requiring employers to provide benefits.......think of how much that will relieve the state's burdens.

Can you explain how the gubmint is going to monitor who, which Americans actually have applied for these supposedly "undesireable" jobs to begin with?

Supposedly, the only jobs given the "working to become legal" workers are those American workers who either did not desire to fill them or there were not enough American workers to meet the demand and the jobs had to be filled with immigrants.

What's is going to be? A new gubmint department estabsished for no other reason than to check the thousands of employers and millions of jobs Americans didn't want or couldn't fill?
