You're right. This speech bears no resemblence to the wild claims being made all over this site today by so many Freepers. Mass hysteria. So you think this amnesty is a good idea?

. Granting amnesty encourages the violation of our laws, and perpetuates illegal immigration. America is a welcoming country, but citizenship must not be the automatic reward for violating the laws of America. (Applause)This is not amnesty..

So you think this amnesty is a good idea? Hmm... I thought it was a Guest Worker Program, and that the following paragraph explains the difference.
"Some temporary workers will make the decision to pursue American citizenship. Those who make this choice will be allowed to apply in the normal way. They will not be given unfair advantage over people who have followed legal procedures from the start. I oppose amnesty, placing undocumented workers on the automatic path to citizenship. Granting amnesty encourages the violation of our laws, and perpetuates illegal immigration. America is a welcoming country, but citizenship must not be the automatic reward for violating the laws of America."

Before we jump off the cliff with the rest of the lemmings, let's look at this program fairly.
Are you old enough to remember the Bracero Program?
Employers had to request a certain number of workers whom they would provide for and pay a minimum wage.
At the end of their agreed upon time to work here they returned to Mexico.
The only difference I can see in the Bracero Program and GW's program is that these workers can now apply for permanent legal citizenship.
Isn't that what we've been clamoring for all along?

If this is amnesty then I guess I support some sort of amnesty. I'm not interested in wreaking vengence on illegals. Crossing the border illegally isn't murder. I don't want them granted citizenship, but if they want to enter a legal work system upon paying a fine then I don't mind.
