There are several things in this that really make sense. First of all, one of the things hinted at is that we are going to start enforcing the law against those who hire illegals now. There will no longer be an excuse to do that. Second, if they are not employed, they must go home. That's going to be easy to check and easy to enforce. Third, I think they are about to get dead serious about enforcing the borders. This is all in preparation for it.

Yeah. And the Supreme Court is gonna totally gut that unconstitutional CFR law, too.

The Conservative position on this issue should be pretty clear -- side with those who take personal responsibility for their lives, work their butts off and send money home to their families, and go after those who do not make a positive contribution to society.

Didn't you forget those who obey the law, specifically those dealing with immigration?

He also made it perfectly clear that they may bring family members along with them(making anchor babies ever so much more convenient).

Taiwan had a version of a "temporary worker" program several years ago where temporary workers were not allowed to have children or get married; those who got pregnant were deported. Taiwan may have changed the rules about pregnancy since then.

The problems with Taiwan's program included higher social costs and that some workers would "run away" from their original employers. I'm sure the US would have the same problems with trying to keep track of disappearing guest workers.

I doubt we could deport pregnant guest workers. It would probably violate their civil rights or something.

These formerly illegal workers might pay Federal Income Tax all right, but since they will be able to bring their families over here with them, and they're going to be working in low-paying jobs, they'll get back all they pay in to the U.S. Govt., plus more, under the Earned Income Credit provision of the tax code.

First, he said no amnesty - no reward for illegally entering our country.

The whole damn program is an amnesty program by a different name.

Second, if one is in this country illegally and want to stay they must register for a temporary worker program and must have a job.

Like sweeping floors at Wal-Mart?

Third, after three years the worker must go back home and then can re-apply.

And you really think they're gonna go home? Please. Be realistic.

Fourth, he did not offer to pay Social Security to these workers, but a system where they can get credit in their home country.

Oh, gee. A cookie. Thank you, may I have another?

Fifth, enforcement against employers hiring anyone not in the temporary worker program will be strong.

Like it is now for those hiring illegals? Hmmmm?

Sixth, employers must try to hire Americans first.

And how will this be enforced? By the same ones policing illegals as well? Yeah. Right.

What I get from this is that we will get a handle on who is here. Those here have to have a job - not stand around the convenience store looking for day labor. We will weed out criminals.

So am I supposed to not see the literally dozens of men standing by the Circle K waiting for a pickup every morning? Yeah. Right. I was born at night -- but not last night.

Any services they receive (schools, police, etc) will be paid by their tax dollars as well (since they will be here legally, they will also be paying taxes).

The liberals are already whining because temporary workers will be paying taxes but not voting.

There is nothing new.

US permanent residents ["green card" holders] are not allowed to vote either.

How can US temporary residents [the proposed "blue card" holders] be allowed to vote?

Besides the current waiting period of 5 years of US permanent residency before being allowed to apply for US citizenship, future US citizens should be given a more rigorous test of English and American history.

I applaud President Bush for raising this issue about our current lax citizenship tests.

I guess Reagan was a RINO also, or have you forgotten his blanket amnesty?

Oh, and look what it's done for Southern California. Is that success?

I don't care what you think of his term, he simply returned some of the border states to other countries.

Great for the elite who can now pay extremely low wages to their maids, landscapers etc,

Making illegals legal will drive the cost up...not down.

It won't get any cheaper than it has been.

Further, being able to pay a gardner once a month or a maid twice a month doesn't make one 'elite'.

Anyone who has full time domestic staff could care less if they cost 6 or 12 bucks an hour...they got money to burn.

I misread your post. I thought it was the usual about flyover country being empty.

Now I will reply to what you actually said:

I recently drove nearly the entire west cost of this country and from what I saw, it is hardly full up.

Well then, I guess West Coast real estate must be cheap, because there is so much of it to go around.

Yeah, Americans really want a new flood of welfare recipients.

Illegals are already prohibited from receiving welfare. Guest workers are required to have a job before they apply for entry. If they are unemployed, they have to leave. If they stay anyway, they are then here illegally - hence, no welfare benefits...

Got that?

"That's going to be easy to check and easy to enforce."

The US guv doesn't do a thing about the 30 to 40 million citizens who do not file their income taxes annually and you believe the Imperial Senate will suddenly create a program to monitor 12 plus million illegal aliens? What color is the sky in your world?

Is there an objective summary of the points the President proposed? If your post is it, then I say this proposal may actually do more to stop illegal immigration than anyone had in mind. Did he say anything about blanket amnesty?

It's better than what we have now. And it monitors the companies that hire them and it monitors them.

No, it is not better than the bad system we have now.

There is nothing "temporary" about this plan at all. The fact that you swallow that argument uncritically merely shows that your understanding of how the immigration game is played is very poor. The most critical step toward gaining citizenship is gaining legitimacy at ANY level for ANY reason. Once that legitimacy is secured, an army of lawyers of liberal judges exists to move the alien to the next step: full citizenship.

You can expect that every Mexican who is allowed in under the guest worker provisions will eventually be granted full citizenhip, along with his entire family and even extended family, if that is what he desires.

And, having tasted the good life in the US for three to six years, precious few of them will desire to return to the Fox's corrupt rat-hole of a nation. They will stay to become the next liberal Democrat power bloc.

And how long do you suppose it will be before they demand to be allowed to contend for for the jobs Americans DO want? Watch for them to make the demand sooner rather than later. They will argue that only allowing them to do jobs no one else wants is racist and discriminatory. How do you think the courts will respond to that argument? I predict the courts (9th Crcuit and California Supremes, esp) will hold that they entitled to equal protection of the laws and therefore should have equal access to all jobs and all benefits--government jobs if not jobs in the private sector. The fact that they are techically not citizens won't mean diddly.

**With all due respect...have you ever talked to blue collar workers? Those who live in poor towns or industrial towns? They will do all kinds of work no matter what the job. This is just shady...I just wish you could see this. **

Please don't assume I know nothing of difficult times. My father was a diecaster (sp?) at Johnson Motors. During layoffs he pumped gas, janitored the local schools and did handyman work. As a teen I took in ironing to help out.

My husband was out of work for 11 months. He did handyman work and I cleaned houses to make ends meet. We did what was necessary. We both have degrees.

Flyer posting the main points of Bush's speech. Perhaps you could take a look at his post.
