President Bush, why is Mexico's problem ours to solve? Why is it our responsibility to find space, jobs, freedom, and money for people that the Mexican government is too shiftless, incompetent, and corrupt to treat decently? How does our being Fox's pressure valve give him incentive to repair is own boiler?

Over the generations we have received optimistic pepople from every part of the world. By tradition and by history we are a welcoming society. Every generation of immigrants has reaffirmed assimilating newcomers. Between 1891 and 1920 we received 18 million men and women from other nations. The children of immigrants helped liberate the land of their ancestors.

True, but we haven't traditionally funded their move, their living expenses, and their retirements, etc.. It's not that they're not welcome. They should do it legally and at their own expense.

**It is much easier to suck off the government's teet than to work. To prove you are right, welfare needs to be reformed and welfare recipents should be made to work the jobs many say only illegals will do.**

I believe the State of Utah has *workfare* rather than welfare.

The one where the Lead Moderator asked everyone to cool the rhetoric a bit on the immigration threads.

It's what the President said about the immigration system.

This is supposed to be a live thread about the President's speech, but it seems to be a bashing party, so I'm leaving.

That is a great point.

How about we tell Canada to give unemployed Americans jobs in Canada.

Illegal entry makes it more difficult to secure the homeland. Jobs being created are jobs US citizens aren't filling. Search for a better life is a basic desire. Many undocumented workers have walked miles and endangered their lives, falling prey to sumgglers. They end up in the shadows of American life, fearing to call the police , afraid to go home to visit. This situation is wrong. Out of common sense our laws should allow willing workers to enter our country and fill jobs Americans aren't filling.

I believe we can do this without jeopardizing American livelihood. America MUST control its borders.
